It does not matter.
In a democracy, you have a duty to get the leaders you want into place.
Whether democracy is functional or not, and how much so at which stages of its life cycle, is perhaps another question.
Our founding fathers (all of whom were gay) believed that this right/duty extended to revolt against the existing government.
The Confederates died as heroes. Maybe we do not agree with them -- slavery preserves diversity, so is silly for that and other reasons -- but they were doing their duty.
