Darwinian evolution isn’t strictly deterministic. It’s random mutation filtered through non-random selection. So while the selective pressures modern humans underwent did amount to greater cognition a la abstract reasoning, linguistic capability, etc, those selective pressures aren’t the same for all species all of the time. Consider: the goal is not to find yourself at the top of the food chain, but to reproduce just one more time.
