I try telling myself that bad things happen weather I know about them or not, but if I see the bad, I can try to help. If I look away, it still happens, but I can't even bear witness. Don't know if that kind of pep talk would help her, but I give it to myself a fair bit.
Part of the problem is that most people who are attracted to social work, or health care, or even policing (some cops, anyway) tend to be young, idealistic, and naive, and want to save the world, or at least help people, and they are completely unequipped to deal with just how dire the problems actually are.
