They are rich people who give over & above because they believe in free speech.
In early 2020, when FSU had only just started, I was only the 2nd "GC" woman they supported (Selina Todd was the first).

A mystery FSU donor gave a bunch of the first few people a gift of £3000 each, as compo for loss of earnings. It was very welcome at the time. (I had to take early retirement, I still had 6 years until retirement, so obviously lost out in terms of pension input from my employer).
