you mentioned plan9 as a potential supercomputing target. last i checked, plan9 doesn't support some of the modern hardware needed for things like storage/network fabric. certainly you could build a compute cluster with plan9 but it's not going to perform anywhere near something like the hpe systems that run crayos (linux-based).
have a look at the hcl for plan9, there's no way you could compete https://plan9.io/wiki/plan9/supported_PC_hardware/
that being said, if someone wanted to build a cluster i'd love to see it. in fact i'd fund the hardware just to make it come to life.
