You can have open communication without a monoculture... It's a problem when large instances & blocklists effectively decide who's on the network. You can have open communication without a monoculture... But you can't have open communication with heavy-handed blocks.
I've accepted that there never will be a single fedi, but I agree it's certainly not a deal-breaker when it comes to the utility of Fedi as a whole.
