    @wjmaggos
    I really love the idea of "big fedi" for the same reason I love the web for what it is. The social layer itself seems to be a point of contention because people largely don't see websites existing on the clearnet (or darknets) as in association with each other by default.

    More and more I begin to wonder if "Big Fedi" is possible as a project at all, due to the fact that it requires some form of social contract that can't reasonably be enforced.

    An uncharitable take would be that "Big Fedi" can't work because it's the tragedy of the commons applied to social currency. (which is what drives HOA Fedi behavior)

    But my optimistic nature leads me to believe that a "Big tent Fedi" can and will exist if progress is made against the "us vs them" fights in society. So I would say if we want cooperation and co-existence in cyberspace, we need it IRL as well.

      @gabriel @wjmaggos I think Fedi could be as big as Email.

      But "Big tent Fedi"? Why would anyone want such a thing?

      @gabriel @wjmaggos But we do have people from many different ideologies. It's already possible.

      >But in practice the blocklists fracture the network.

      Yes, hence my original question: why would anyone want a monoculture? Some people don't want to talk to each other, and I think that is totally fine.

      In theory I wholeheartedly agree. But in practice the blocklists fracture the network.
      But more small instances can make a big difference in the long run.
      I just worry that the incentives to censor will always be a non-trivial restriction on the idea of a single global federated network.
      Though to be fair, email has its own problems. A lot of self-hosters point out gmail is its own beast.

      It's a problem when large instances & blocklists effectively decide who's on the network. You can have open communication without a monoculture... But you can't have open communication with heavy-handed blocks.

      I've accepted that there never will be a single fedi, but I agree it's certainly not a deal-breaker when it comes to the utility of Fedi as a whole.
