@shoq@Luca@ProgGrrl@Beth@lakoja I've tested this and have seen it work. There is sometimes some latency because distributing posts depends on a batch process rather than something that is always running immediately (to help manage load). And if more people are following someone, those followed posts will load quicker because the people following them are more likely to have reloaded their timelines in the interim.
I have tested this again and again. It's either not true, not supported by mastodon.social, or the results are so latent as to be extremely unreliable. How are you making it work?
- An instance can only show posts in the search that it knows of. (Exception: Using a Relay) - Ways of knowing posts: - - By users on that instance ("local posts") - - By users followed by at least one user on that instance - - Boosted by an user followed by at least one user on that instance - - Searched for by URL by an user on that instance - Instances remove remote posts after a certain time (Content cache retention period) - All feeds are reverse chronological
Thanks for not dropping me off this convo. I am *very* interested in the details of these topics.
In fact - if anyone else reading this chain knows of any explainer type articles or videos about these details, please chime in or DM me separately.
Details I’m referring to: 1) how much result you get on hashtag searching and what influences that density; 2) how boosting, following, following back influences one’s Home Feed, Federated feed, and hashtag search.
Let's say I am account on Twitter that is looking to transition to Mastodon. I do not set up my own instance. Some of my followers look at what instance I am on and pick the same one. They end up with about 200 followers each.
If I post something with a hashtag, are those hashtags only found in searches by people using the same instance used by my followers and me, or does it expand to the instances of my followers' followers?
Does the answer change if my followers boosted the specific post with the hashtags and it was seen by their followers on different instances?
User on small instance: That's correct. You will only see few posts when searching for hashtags.
Professional on own instance: Without followers, your posts won't show up in any search outside of your own instance. You need at least one follower from an instance to have your posts show up on that instance for every user there.
It's not the amount of followers that influence the visibility, but the instance diversity of those followers.
If you would be so kind to entertain some questions to clarify my understanding.
I am not someone who uses social media for professional purposes, but I am looking for more information about certain topics. If I am on a small server, I and search for those topics, I might not see all of hashtags or be able to connect to the community that shares that interest. Is that correct?
Now the opposite scenario. Let's say I am account that is only here for professional purposes. I start my own server so as to better control my account and content. I post using hashtags. Does the fact I am in a very small server impact people's ability to find my posts in a hashtag search?
One more question. I'm a professional on my own server. Does my hashtag visibility in searches increase as my followers increase?
Thank you in advance. I am very interested in more journalists joining Mastodon, and I am watching whether news organizations and journalists will start their own instances.
@lakoja@ProgGrrl Correct. Hashtag search on instances only shows you posts that are known to the instance (because of follow, boost or URL search).
When you are on a smaller instance, you won't find many posts. Because of that I build #mastovue years ago. I use it regularly to search for posts known to mastodon.social
