@nova ?️ I'm not using my name here, so it's a lot more freeing. I do miss a chunk of my friends. What I like best is I'm not afraid to talk to strangers.
@nova I had been on twitter since February or March of 2007, over 200k+ tweets. Stopped entirely in early November. Have not deleted my account or removed tweets. I am *trying* to get used to not sucking from the firehose anymore -- I do worry about not Knowing Things but I do, on the whole, feel content about the decision.
@nova I have for the most part. I still pop on to Twitter to check DMs and a list I created for folks that have not moved to Mastodon. Luckily for me most of the folks that I followed there are on Mastodon. As far as my biggest takeaway, I keep kicking myself for giving up on Mastodon so quickly when I first signed up back in 2018. The experience here is so much better for my mental health.
BTW, thank you and the mods for this great server!!!!
@nova I've pretty much completely migrated off of Twitter, I've been logging in every couple of days to re-run Fedifinder, but I haven't gotten anyone new from Fedifinder recently, so it's probably time to change the frequency to weekly or monthly.
I was never on Twitter as heavily as some; I kind of disliked Twitter from the start, but was there because enough folks I wanted to follow were on there.
@nova I've been trying to move to the fediverse since 2016(pre-mastodon). Glad to finally make it. A few people I've known for years I'll miss, maybe they'll make their way here eventually, maybe not.
@nova Totally off Twitter now unless someone specifically links me to it. Takeaways are that the environment here is so much better than Twitter. Also no ads is the best. Meeting so many cool people and talking about whatever is what I want out of this kind of social media so it's really great.
@nova Not yet, still sharing contact data with some people. I don't think I'd find many takeaways, apart from missing some people who won't migrate in the short term.
On the other hand, I've found that the time spent here is much more valuable than in Twitter. That algorithm knows how to make people waste their time...
@nova i've stopped using twitter since 2019/2020. since then always using mastodon or other federated microblogging stuff. what stuck me the most was the ability to make friends again and not be someone else audience.
@nova I’m signed out, but still check in on certain people from time to time. Mostly just favorite artists that are still active there. I’ve been trying to use https://nitter.net whenever possible.
@nova Still have the account to prevent it from getting hijacked, but have wiped everything and haven‘t been there in days. I‘m feeling a lot less agitated and spend a lot less time doomscrolling. I know this is still the honeymoon phase, but I’m inspired by the fediverse and I feel this is so much closer to what the web used to be and is supposed to be. It is time we came home.
Much less stress to play the up to date game. Less worries about stupid hashtags. Content here is a lot more accurate, interesting and human. Since I parked it, it also sent totally bonkers on negativity and harassment so it comforts me to not use it.
@nova me. I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it and so kept it partly for checking up on things, but found that the community and experience had degraded so much I could not recognize it over there, and was fine with complete deactivation
@nova I deleted my Twitter account when I created my account here. Missing some brand accounts I was following (AMD, nVidia, Valve...), but that's not worth of getting back, thoroughly enjoying Mastodon.
@nova This place a has a chill vibe, and I love the local feed. Masto architecture does make me curious about other local feeds on instances dedicated to other interests though.
Wow, open ended question. A few thoughts: * People are generally so much nicer here, a lot less likely to dunk-and-run. * Timeline stays tolerable even in the face of breaking news. * Many instances go out of their way to support marginalized communities in word and deed, Hachyderm is one of them and I love y'all for it. ('bout damn time!) * Keeping a good thing going is going to cost $$ first and volunteer effort second in the long haul...ready to help at least with the first.
Biggest takeaway is I'm no longer constantly doomscrolling, instead I'm engaging with users and toots about subjects I'm actually interested and invested in
@nova setup on #hachyderm (thank you) and post.news - love the first (using web ui) and not a fan of second. Still go back to the fowl site for some biology / genomics info (journals not moved yet) and some diehards. Minor interactions there. Looking forward to not seeing twitter content in mastodon / post.news.
@nova my old account is a pointer to here. Biggest takeaway is quote tweets while good for engagement metrics were terrible for the experience. The lack of quote toots, here mean I have to <gasp> interact with people.
@nova I have. It’s made me realise how much of my creative energy was drained by silly posts on Twitter. Now I’m starting to focus creating on my self-hosted sites and consciously use places like Hachyderm to re-form a close knit community.
@nova ?♂️ I haven’t logged into Twitter in weeks, now. After a couple days of muscle memory accidentally taking me there, I don’t miss it all, except for a handful of people who haven’t moved to Mastodon. I may have to log back in to get in touch with the only person who can get me my favorite hot sauce, though. Just about out…
@nova ✋ I've setup a readonly anonymous method for following a couple people I care about and staying informed but mastodon is the only platform I'm interacting with ATM.
@nova honestly, just how little I miss it. Also, the lack of expectation to be "something" without knowing what that something was. It feels much chiller here. I can post when and if it makes sense for me. I always felt like I had to carefully curate a specific identity on Twitter to please the algorithmic gods, see content I want, etc. That didn't follow me here.
@nova read only Twitter been like that for a while. Feels like a masto bot of my own could be a great way to get more content on my feed that I care about.
@nova i'm read-only for news and local alerts. i use tweetdeck with lists to prevent ads and promoted tweets. also trying to curate similar lists on mastodon and find and verify accounts that don't get picked up by fedifinder.
so far i feel like there is more conversation here, but part of that may be me intentionally interacting more. i was stuck in a lurk and retweet rut
@nova me, but only because I can't get back on because of MFA issues and Twitter support hasn't answered any of my pleas for help.
But I notice that #Mastodon, or #Hachyderm in particular, is very friendly and welcoming. Even if I could get back on, it would only be to lock my account.
@nova I’m really liking it so far. One thing I miss is all the businesses. I’ve always used Twitter to get most of my customer support. Worth it to replace the rest of Twitter though.
@nova I was in read only mode on Twitter for years. Posting here already, it feels more welcoming and less like shouting into the void. I've checked my Twitter feed like once or twice in the last two weeks just to see what's up, and I don't feel like I'm missing much. I used to check it daily
@nova the lack of an algorithm feeding me content means I’ve had to take an active role in finding quality posts to fill my timeline. For me, it also drives my participation in the community we have here. It’s refreshing to be in a place where bad actors looking to disrupt civil discourse are actually held accountable for their actions.
The biggest takeaway for me is the complete lack of curation.
The algorithm, though flawed was at least providing a level of curation that I am now responsible for figuring out a alternative. Eventually, where I end up will be superior; just going to take a while to figure out.
@nova I’m an Ethereum, and occasionally Bitcoin, developer. I genuinely believe in blockchain’s ability to change finance and level the playing field; preservation of privacy and data security, etc.
Twitter has nearly ruined an entire industry. It’s awful. I am meeting like minded people here, but Twitter has checked out of reality.
@nova I have, still need to finish fully locking down my old Twitter. Biggest take away is the realization that Twitter was more of an outrage feed then I thought - and I was pretty cynical about Twitter. But, Hachyderm and Mastodon remind me a ton of the old web forums I used to love, that largely vanished as social media took over.
@nova I feel really grimy when I step back over there. The recommended tweets were all from creeps. My fave artist still hasn't got a mastodon so I'll keep checking.
@nova Me, if you count basically nothing but continued migration outreach as "migrated off". I'll still use it if there's a critical need but not engaging in ways that add value to the platform.
Probably the biggest one is that organic discovery is extremely slow and different on mastodon. It just genuinely doesn't scale the same way and it's much harder
The other really big one is that I can literally feel the difference between engagement hacking and a lack of engagement hacking. It's wild how I no longer open "the social media app" compulsively for the sake of opening it. (I do so for other reasons but mindless dopamine drips don't happen anymore)
@nova ? no ads, lots more honest engagement, more fun little things. Less consistent dopamine hit due to lack of viral memes, but that makes a smoother ride overall. More cute little updates and less "4M people liked this AND SO MUST YOU"
@nova I logged off for the last time several weeks ago.
Anything newsworthy I don't miss that much. There's plenty of ways to find out what's going on in the world.
But I miss seeing the thoughts of many people that haven't made it over here. Some simply have too much of their careers tied up in Twitter for one reason or another. Others are sticking with "the devil they know" as Mastodon is still an unknown quantity. My new timeline is neat and exciting, but I miss these voices.
@nova I don't post there anymore, and I uninstalled the apps. I've stopped clicking on links to Twitter on here, because I now feel that posting links to there is somewhat rude to people that explicitly came here to get away from it. Not judging others who still do! I did too at one point! I just... don't do that anymore.
I miss Black Twitter. Mastodon is getting more Black voices, but we're still few and far between here.
@nova I only open it when I need to check something there which is like maybe a few times a week if that. I've cut it out like 99% and feel better for it
@nova I would say yes, save for the fact that I have my Chromebook blog posts published there via Buffer. So I do check my notifications to see if there are any questions in regards to those. Otherwise… I’m out.
I believe algorithms are neither inherently good or evil. Who creates them & transparency around their use is more important than I realized.
I’d rather interact with people than brands/companies. Yes, people here can represent those, but I get a better sense of them and their agenda.
When the news about more Trump shenanigans came out my wife sent me a Twitter link. I came here instead... There was no general freakout, just a few mentions.
After a few minutes I realized how awesome that is ?
@nova I think Hachyderm is already doing most of it?
By providing a safe and welcoming environment for Black folk and for people that care about Black folk. Excellent moderation at 30K users. Impressive! So easy to say! So hard to do!
I think after folks see the positive experiences of some of the earlier Black kids in the Hachyderm pool ??♂️, that more folks will feel comfortable joining.
I would love to see a different onboarding channel than "Join Mastodon."
Something like a "Safe Space for Black Voices" section near the "Safe Space for Technical Professionals" section? Then yes, I think that would be super helpful!
@mekkaokereke I’ll see what I can do — I think once January rolls around we will have a little bit more to say about how to make an even stronger message
@nova@mekkaokereke Mekka, can you expand a little more on what you would like to see for an onboarding channel? What sort of user journey/experience would you recommend?
I've seen a ton of different sites and blogs post recently about how to join (or more specifically migrate from Twitter). Do you mean something like that, yet specific to Hachyderm?
@nova deleted the app several weeks ago. signal to noise ratio significantly higher on hachyderm/mastodon. engagement way higher quality - like actual conversations.
@nova me ?♀️?♀️?♀️ I walked away from my verified (in before times) account, and not biggest takeaway is I feel more creative and engaged in my new networks... I had 14k followers but I imagine many were bots or close friends, the fresh and new had gone away.
@nova I've mostly moved off of $8chan. Like others it's pretty much just read-only, only checking like once a day maybe. I used to use it for work, but most of the network I kept tabs on has moved here. Now it's only just a place for memes, and they're only getting worse as time goes on.
I mainly only check it now for posts from some dev twitch streamers I follow. Otherwise, it makes me kinda sad and annoyed so I steer clear.
@nova mostly migrated now, still logged in on a computer but removed the app from my phone.
Biggest takeaway is mastodon isn’t great at breaking news but is better in basically every other way. Honestly though, it’s probably healthier not mainlining the news through the twitter fire hose anyway
@nova unfortunately I can not. There are a lot of artists I follow especially in Japan that seem to have no desire to move, and a couple of indie game devs. So I keep mine for checking it every so often. I definitely check it far less, and I unfollowed maybe half my followings as they are on mastadon now or I don't want to see them. Mastadon has most of my attention, and far more enjoyable
@nova I had two twitter accounts and I've shut down the public one and stopped really looking at the other one but it's still there.
+ love the visibility controls on your own posts, obviating need for multiple acounts. + love the local timeline on hachyderm !! it's such a great vibe + love the engagement level - finding extant friends is so-so - "you can follow hashtags" -- ok, but finding the "common" ones to attach posts to is kinda challenging
@nova I haven’t logged in over there in weeks now. The biggest issue is Fomo, especially when work tracks @s on a zulip thread and I know I mustn’t click on any of those posts for fear of being sucked back in.
@nova there's still too many people, especially from the non-technical space that I would like to continue following, but those are still on Twitter. I have to admit I still open my account once or twice per week, but read only mode. Being here has been great so far and not having my timeline full of ads, people shouting and toxic tweets is indeed the best takeaway.
@nova honestly the lack of ads has shown me how desensitized I am to just being marketed to constantly and how nice it is to not have that and just have my friends being nerds in my feed.
@nova - I am only keeping it for my name so it doesn't get taken, but haven't logged in. The biggest takeaway is we're able to cultivate a small community and that it's a lot more welcoming.
@nova I was never on Twitter, but I’ve noticed the occasional submission on Hacker News pointing to this or that post on Mastadon, instead of to Twitter, which has been appreciated. I’m curious as to whether #Hackydermian efforts should include things like intentional bot accounts, like the old days of Twitter - accounts that track internet trends / data, etc?
