I kept up with developments of the web, because I'm a web developer, so I have to to some extend, but never used my real name or photo online, never use emoji unless it makes sense to use them, never went with the 1 minute "let's turn JewTube into a TikTok clone" meme (not to mention that I got kicked off from JewTube long before they started this meme).
Honestly, I did store files online for a while, but that was on a NextCloud server that I hosted myself, and I took it down as I got myself a NAS, so now I just have no reason to use NextCloud anymore.
Also, the whole Javascriptification, Discordification, and Cuckflarification of the entire internet is what incentivized me to re-explore the old internet and Fedi (technically imageboards, matome sites, and BBS too, but I never left those), which is far more pleasant to use.
No idea why zoomers and most millenials refuse to explore the old internet too.- Wrongthink likes this.

You can still do most stuff without having one just fine (even online banking doesn't require a smartphone (yet)), but not having a smartphone here is still a very alien concept. -

I have 2 of those, so I know.
But even if you somehow liberate them, you'll still have the problems of them having a cellular modem, anthenna's for WiFi, Bluetooth, TV tuner, and NFC or FeliCa, a microphone, a camera, motion sensors, GPS, and all the other stuff that make all phones fundamentally problematic in the first place.Wrongthink likes this. -

Wrongthink (wrongthink@cdrom.tokyo)'s status on Tuesday, 16-Aug-2022 12:14:25 JST Wrongthink @ryo This girl, who is a tech normie as best I can discern, produced a really decent overview of what she calls “the indie web” to introduce gen Z and millennial neophytes: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=rTSEr0cRJY8 It is a bit neocities centric but that kind of content is the thing that can draw eyes over to the fact that a non-corporate, less centralized web is alive and well.
Also, here in Japan if you refuse to have a smartphone with you at all times
By whom? Businesses? It’s saddening that the default assumed state is now phone ownership. One of my own observations from this side of things: My bank automatically set everyone up with online banking a few years ago. Ever since I refused, they’ve been charging fees for paper statement deliveries and constantly advertising just what a headache I’d be saving if only I would just switch. But that’s not happening any time soon. I’ve had stores ask me about installing their apps to save a percentage on purchase, to which I’ve learned it is faster to just lie to them “my phone is broken” than to explain each and every time that I don’t even own one.

I can understand this very well after Covid. Using a smartphone prevents you from getting Covid, at least this is what people believe when they are looking for a Covid tracking app. (Taking a step further, is better than doing nothing.)寮 likes this. -

Businesses and soyciety as a whole.
My friends are now used to it, but first time I went to meet up in real life, they were absolutely shocked to learn that I didn't have a phone with me. -
