Recently got into a heated (and frankly stupid) argument on discord regarding modern cartoons. Thread.
1. This image does NOT reflect modern animation as a whole as it leaves out uniquely great shows such as Primal, Love Death & Robots, Phineas and Ferb, Bluey, and Carmen Sandiego.
2. These character designs were all criticized for looking the same and lazy. Uhh...no? Like, even a small child can tell the difference between a kid, a fish and a bear.

4. CalArts is NOT a style, it's a fucking school! They don't teach you how to draw a specific way, they teach you how to use modern filmaking tools to bring your visions to life.
5. You know the term "CalArts style" was coined by a hasbeen cartoonist/sexual predator, right? Yeah, don't listen to that motherfucker John K as he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about ?

6. Modern cartoons and animated movies are so much more diverse now than they were back when animation got started. Don't @ me with your whole "mOdErN aNiMaTiOn LoOkS tHe SaMe" bullshit!
7. Last but not least, animation isn't just for kids. It's for everyone. I don't want to hear anybody say "it's not that deep. It's for kids." That's the same bullshit everuone and their fucking grandmother called out the Oscars for -.-

3. Then there's this lazy shit which tries to make it seem like the character designers were copying each other's homework. It's painfully obvious the person who made this had to force the characters to look like each other because Dipper and Star's mouths don't actually go that big in their respective shows.

@matana @beardalaxy @fugger It was well known within the animation industry that John K was sexually harassing these girls since they were 14/15. Everyone knew he was a not only a controlling asshole, but a fucking creep as well. He only got away with it because the statuet of limitations expired, but know no one wants to work or be remotely affiliated with that pedo -.-

either way, molesting accusations seldom count as a compelling argument about cartoon styles, we're not talking about John Money here, who raped two prepubescent boys, documented it, made an entire experiment out of it, failed it to such a degree that these boys later killed themselves when they grew up, and everyone still fucking use the term "gender" despite it being complete bullshit

hence where actually "calarts style" comes from, because yeah, idgaf what high school of education these animators graduated from (although schools killing creativity is another huge bag of worms....), it's just that describing "yeah, you know this popular current style which tries way too hard to look 'soft' and 'cutesy' and you just know that it will start to read you a fucking lecture right in the episode while referencing Sailor Moon even though it took zero lessons out if it?" sounds and looks clumsy, I'll just say "calarts style" and be understood
(also Laputa and Nausicaä have huge Soyuzmultfilm vibes, especially with bgs)

when you see anime you can pretty much always definitively say "that's anime" but it has far from just the same art style reused over and over imo. it's fairly easy to tell what studio produced an anime or exactly what anime it's from. if you asked me who made all of the shows mentioned above i'd honestly just think, other than gumball/gravity falls, they were all from the same creator but they're all actually different afaik.
this image of anya in different styles, case in point. though the recycled, low budget anime definitely lack originality and end up looking pretty similar. it's only the ones that take a lot of inspiration from the manga that end up looking distinct to the point where even if i'm not super familiar with the anime, if i even see a character from it i'll immediately know which one it is.
and miyazaki art is on another level of serenity and warmth, it looks like how good childhood memories feel.
