     Taoists make ancestral offerings, especially during the hungry ghost festival.

     These communal burners make it easy for everyone to do their offerings in one place instead of inside their homes.

     You’ll see cups of bubble tea and Milo outside them as well (also as offerings).

     When my grandma passed away, my cousins would say we should make papier mache (kim zua 金纸 ) in the form of noodles and burn them for her.

     Sim Lim Square is where you go to get desktops, laptops, phones, GPU and RAM. So these icons look cute

     Sim Lim Tower is where you go to get circuit boards, batteries, wires and cables. I guess they didn’t have good icons.

     It IS a shame that the rich folk out towards Petaluma have been fighting against expansion of the BART.

     @iris_meredith @CStamp the city itself. The greater SF Bay Area is much larger including San Jose which has a million plus. I think people think of it as a collection of cities making one large metro area but the city itself is only 10 by 10 km

     One of the reasons why the Japanese were especially brutal and murderous towards the Chinese population in Singapore and Malaya during WW2: it was vengeance for the Straits Chinese financial support for Japan’s war in China a few years earlier.

     Organizations like these were involved in major Chinese geopolitical activity, like supporting Sun Yat Sen on his drive to get rid of the monarchy, activating for the late 30s war, and later for defence and sustenance through invasion and then later Japanese occupation.

     Later, many people involved in these movements also went on to form the core base of anti-British, anti-colonial pro-independence movements after WW2.

     This is how we do laundry in Singapore. After washing, stick your clothes on bamboo poles and stick them outside your kitchen.

     With the immense tropical heat, they’ll be dry very quickly

     @skinnylatte ¿What about the humidity? When I was in Sg, I tried washing and drying some clothing in my hotel room. Even after hanging overnight they weren't dry. I ironed some underwear until it was dry, then tracked down a laundromat to dry the rest.

     @skinnylatte I attempted to suss it out using the https://sgtrainstatus.com/timing/lines/circle-line website, but it seems even they have clockwise and anti-clockwise confused - label shows "clockwise" but first run appears to be anti-clockwise, last run clockwise. It also doesn't - as of 5 pm PDT July 21 - seem to have been updated to the full circular route, showing only Dhoby Ghaut to Harbourfront.

     @skinnylatte ¿Does the Dhoby Ghaut spur act as a shuttle or does it proceed to follow the entire loop? I have this picture of trains entering the spur never to return, until they back up all the way to Promenade and block looping trains from proceding.

     I looked at several webpages about the Circle Line and nary a mention as to how the full loop and the spur interact.

     There are shops on the ground floor of most of our apartments.

     Often they’re supermarkets and things like that. Sometimes you get an entire area dedicated to a trade.. like this building which has a row of aquarium-related shops on the ground fooor.

     I miss home terribly and I was so glad to to be able to return after three years away. I hope to not have to stay away for so long again.

     Every time I visit, and leave, I suppose I am consciously weighing the costs of what I chose to leave behind.

     And why.

     My life there is convenient, easy, privileged, delicious, and full of love and warmth.

     I’ll be back in a few months to spend a longer period of time.
