@OliviaVespera hey, I want to let you know that the best place for input on how tags.pub works is on GitHub:

@OliviaVespera relays are not made to the same spec. They are some of the most eccentric technology on the Fediverse.

This document covers some of the ins and outs of the two main relay protocols:

      https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/ae0c/fep-ae0c.md

I'll be frank: opt-in, consent-based architecture is not a strong suit of Fediverse relays. Most of them have no way to even opt out.

They also are extremely opaque; it's hard to know what they do and when.

@evan thanks, did you like the structure and design for consent chains I described?

I think if anything it has to be talked to with the folks who maintain relays, i don't know if all primary relays are made to the same spec that some group governs.

@tony @OliviaVespera I think the problem is that it's way too much data for small servers. It's a lot better to subscribe to tags you're interested in, and just get that stuff.

@evan @OliviaVespera I'd expect a relay to firehose everything to me and it be my server's responsibility to do any filtering. Maybe others don't think of them the same way..

But as a single user instance they're invaluable, especially for hashtags.

@OliviaVespera @tony np. I'm going to concentrate more on supporting other platforms directly. It is where tags.pub can help the most people.

@evan @tony I think then this FEP looks like the place to look at, and to have conversations with people who run open relays in that list you shared a while back. otherwise, tags.pub would have to implement the consent model that to be fair the entire infrastructure should support.

for my part, I'll have to look at it another time. My capacity is limited at the moment and i have small worries about github that i hope places like codeberg and others may one day fully solve. but thank you x

@evan @OliviaVespera It seems to be more the other way.. people setup relays then find when you've got a few hundred people subscribing to all that data it's not sustainable, so the relay shuts down.

Means it can be hard to find active relays.. sites listing them are often so far out of date as to be useless.

As a single user instance I link to 6 relays which is probably overkill (I don't know of a way to measure how active each one is, to pare it down) and don't find it overwhelming.
