   It is not hard to see that for all the good intentions, age-based restrictions to social media amount to a Trojan horse for a de facto mandatory digital ID system. Biometric face scans, often falsely presented as a privacy-safe method of age verification, will fail for millions of people: no algorithm can tell the difference between a 16-year-old on the day of their birthday and the day before. Many more users – adults with facial disabilities, young-looking women, or anyone who isn’t white – will face a significantly higher risk of being prompted to upload an ID document because the algorithm cannot accurately verify their age. And so, a biased and inaccurate algorithm will be the arbiter of who does – and who does not – need to upload their ID to unlock huge swathes of the internet.

     @Flick I'm still shocked at the number of people here that downloaded the app that allowed you to know if you were in close proximity to someone with covid. They bragged about it on social media and encouraged others to do it. An app that tracks you and is linked to your medical information. On your phone. Because safety. No concerns about how the information would be stored or shared.

     a) showed what good people they were
     b) inflated the figures
     c) allowed the government to see at a glance who wanted to be controlled
     d) provided data to be used for . . . ?
     I'm not shocked at all. People were begging to be told what to do, say and think. Thinking can be hard work, so a lot of people outsource it. They also like to think they are being kept safe, even if it's an illusion.

     Evoking the emotional response makes it harder to criticise the cause.

     @HebrideanHecate @KeepTakingTheSoma @Flick The Canadian government uses a mother whose daughter killed herself because of online abuse to promote their legislation. Their last real concern is protecting children. It makes me sick.
