I don't understand why every internet connected device needs an address in the first place. I don't like cloudflare, we have ditched them long ago but tunnels allow for something like CGNAT but on a large scale. We have the knoweldge and the tech to do that. why are we not doing that? why does Apple have an /8?

It was a techno-utopianism from the early 90s. They completely ignored all of the terrible things we have learned about what happens when you connect things to the internet. It's like...we now have a completely global network, instantaneous data movement between any two corners of the earth, and if your view of how networks should work is somehow completely unchanged after an event that is unprecedented in human history, let alone in just networking, then your view is garbage. They learned nothing from any of the shit that has happened in the last 32 years. Here's RFC 1627, which was a response to RFC 1597, which established private IP spaces:

It's usually profit driven. v6 is so hated that there's a ton of money in the secondary IP market to buy v4. I've seen older companies who bought large subnets in the early days monetize selling/leasing back their IP space.
Kind of like domain name squatting. It's a cash grab.

The secret to build a network that works and is resilient is to not have interdependencies, and what is the first thing a retard does? Create interdependencies, lots of them.
@graf@p yes look at their DNS resolution it is worse then ipv6 The new IPv8 idea requires every device to log in (authenticate) before connecting to the internet. It also forces all your traffic to be checked and logged by a central "Zone Server." This creates a system for constant surveillance, making true anonymity online impossible.
