@killyourfm Thanks for writing and sharing that. I am giving similar thought… but letting go is so hard. And inertia is an easy path.

@danyork Wow. Well said. Inertia can almost feel like a drug at times. I'm someone who dislikes any kind of confrontation (even an internal one with myself), so the path of least resistance can be attractive.

To give this some context: since October of last year I've been fantasizing about a nomadic lifestyle.

Not necessarily "van life", but not chained to one place either. All the things I want and need in my car. Able to travel to a new destination and explore it on a whim.

I backed off, believing it was a bipolar impulse. Or at the least, a very foolish idea. It isn't either of those. It's just scary, and inertia is comforting...

@john That's inspiring! I actually smiled when I read this, because creativity is something I value above everything else, and I feel that spark has been dying the more I'm stuck inside. The more that life becomes routine.

(I'm rocking a Kia Soul, so it might be harder, but it's still doable!)

@killyourfm I have built up my minivan with modular diy'd bed and shelving to camp in summers. There is something amazing about mobility and minimalism that sparks creativity, freedom and taking calculatrd risks.

@retroalien29 Applauding you and your wife doing all those donations. I need to carve out a pile for that purpose. Thanks for the reminder.

@killyourfm I am reminded that my wife and I are always reevaluating the number of belongings we have and donating items at least once a month.

To pack up and be nomadic though is inspiring yet terrifying.

I've done this twice (maybe three times technically) myself:

      https://battlepenguin.com/philosophy/perspective/minimalism/

I did travel, though not really intentionally. I like living in new places, not traveling necessarily. But the second time I ended up backpacking for a long time. My dad threw out a lot of my stuff when I was out of the country, some things that were irreplaceable. I learned a lot about impermanence.

I have a house and a lot of stuff again, and a homelab. Sometimes I wonder if I'm in the right place, but I also have no regrets for what got me to this point.

as someone who purged and is now on the accumulation side again, I can say that I didn't regret any of it and very few of these items we have are irreplaceable. I didn't travel much because that brings me great anxiety but I got rid of most of my belongings at one point.

I say all of that to say it's not a scary thing, although it can feel like it. You can always get (most) stuff back if you want.

@djsumdog @hobbs Thank you for documenting this, and giving us a glimpse into your mindset. More than that, thanks for being so transparent.

If you have other posts about your travels, I'd love to read them.

I find it fascinating we were both in Croatia the same year, only a couple months apart (though I ended up staying for years). It's a small world, after all.

My photo website is terribly unmaintained an out of date (refactor is on the Backlog-of-Life), but the last 5 pages of it are all photos from Croatia:

      https://journeyofkhan.us

and there are a few of Plitvice Lakes:

      It has begun.

I bought this 17 gallon tote today. Everything I’m going to keep has to fit in it.

Everything else gets sold, donated, or thrown out.

@killyourfm I should do the same but with a twist

"how many kids does one fit?"

      "none"

      "I'll buy 100s of these"

@tbari The Steam Deck is an essential item! Especially since I'll be traveling so much - no badass gaming PC anymore.

The hardest part of this whole process might be deciding which handheld to keep!

Considerations: battery efficiency, screen size (I have 50-year-old eyes), and overall utility. We all know the Steam Deck OLED *should* win, but it's the smallest screen, and that makes a big difference to me now.

Surprisingly, the original Legion Go (with Bazzite obviously) might be my pick for the nomad life, due to screen size & detachable controllers. But you know me, I have to do some battery tests first.
