@nozaki @Turdicus @Twoinchdestroya @Kazak >at the very least would be better off working until maybe 20-22 before going into college with a little bit more intention.
sensible. Different from "guy telling all the White boys interested in politics that they should be plumbers". People would do well to understand this.
>Anecdotally, among my high school friends, college graduation has not had much bearing on someone's financial success.
All the guys who went into finance are making bank. And the good STEM people are doing pretty well. Everyone else is hanging on. -

@WandererUber @Turdicus @Twoinchdestroya @Kazak @nozaki Finance bros are getting the shit automated of them right now. I’m not saying you’re totally wrong, but there’s a danger to telling people to chase the last big thing.
I don’t know a single person making bank right now, and most people I know went to college.
There’s one guys brother who’s a PhD in neuroscience and he makes bank, but that’s top of the top. -

Most people don't have the agency to do that, and most will graduate with a degree they don't do anything with. It's a huge amount of debt, and will cripple the next 5 years, at least, of your life. In theory you should be earning much more afterwards than someone who has only worked, and it could be worth it. But it's a gamble. I think people at the very least would be better off working until maybe 20-22 before going into college with a little bit more intention. Not saying it's for everyone but if someone is a little uncertain taking a couple years to figure yourself out isn't going to influence your final earnings too much and will probably help you find a career that's better for you.

@Turdicus @WandererUber @Kazak college really is what you make of it, if you bury your head in books, it would be purely a stepping stone for a career. If you go with the flow, it is a massive waste of time. if you mix in networking, studying the right things, and making good friends, it's worth it -

@WandererUber @Kazak I enjoyed my time at college, I was at a technical school, but sometimes I wonder how I’d be if I didn’t go. I started later in life, I can’t imagine going to a regular gay guy college though

@wertimer @Griffith @Kazak @Turdicus @Twoinchdestroya @WandererUber @nozaki I see entry level jobs in STEM going from token positions given to gifted students to not existing in five years. I was at a tech meetup last night and we had two instances of people talking about how they used AI at their jobs to develop software which completely replaced and obsolesced entry-level cybersecurity reconnaissance work. Businesses are not going to be able to justify hiring juniors who are going to be reliant on LLMs for work in which the LLMs alone can perform at 80% of the efficiency of the junior for a tenth the cost.
I've considered transitioning to healthcare at this point. The pay isn't as good and you have to deal with old cunts, but you're not going to struggle with a year-long job search which I've currently been under. -

@Griffith @Kazak @Turdicus @Twoinchdestroya @WandererUber @nozaki believable. fwiw I've seen some youngish white guys hired recently in [not the wokest software corp] but not fresh out of school, and it might be overridden by outsourcing and downsizing anyway -

@wertimer @Kazak @Turdicus @Twoinchdestroya @WandererUber @nozaki My old instance mate hasn’t gotten a job in four years since he got his degree. They don’t give you a refund.
