    #USInvaders & allies recorded the war using war photographers, North Vietnam & Viet Cong did it through #art.

    In #TetOffensive 3 phases in 1968, North Vietnam army & Viet Cong attacked military & civilian sites across South Vietnam.

    #USTerrorists retaliated with #MyLaiMassacre on 16 March 1968 - 504 civilians, mainly women & children, were gang-raped & mutilated. Those who helped the Vietnamese were seen as traitors. Only one of the US terrorists - William Calley, was tried. He was only sentenced to house arrest for 3.5 years for the atrocious war crimes. None of the other US terrorists were ever punished for participating in same atrocities on our peoples.

      @kimlockhartga It was part of the tipping point for most US citizens - especially when the napalm girl photo was seen, worldwide. However, it wasn't until mass body bags returned to US that pull out was seriously considered.

      By 1972, US could see that their invasion war was imploding. After 3 million dead Vietnamese & 58,000 dead US soldiers, the victory they were confident of was elusive.

      The invasion on Vietnam exploited 8,744,000 US military personnel serving on active duty with a peak troop strength of 549,500 in 1969, 14.3 million tons of bombs/artillery shells - 676 billion wasted.

      17 years & 2 months of a wasted invasion war, wasted lives & wasted resources. Yet, US never learned a damn thing & keeps doing the same shit in different sovereign nations.

      @PhoenixSerenity My understanding is that this was a turning point in the attitude of the U.S. public toward the war. But, it still took *way* too long for the U.S. invaders to leave, in (typically) the most chaotic way ever. Too many people think only about the horrors of that war for soldiers and marines, and not the obvious horror for the people who were living there!

      I am ashamed of so much that my country has done. Such an overwhelming level of harm toward people abroad *and* at home.

      And I've heard people say "My country, right or wrong." That attitude is the one we need to break first and foremost.

      @PhoenixSerenity Horrifying.

      And yeah, Hegseth talked about air superiority over Iran. 🙄 You had control of the skies over Korea and Vietnam, and what good did it do?

      The massive tunnels system saved many Vietnamese lives. That's why I get upset at white people who called us tunnel rats & are calling Palestinians tunnel rats too.

      More tunnels for another purpose were made in DMZ - site for most violent of exchanges between the north/south. #USTerrorists were releasing thousands of tons of bombs on Vinh Moc village which they believed was a supplier of arms/food to a resistance base on Con Co island .

      Villagers dug - with their hands - a 2 km long tunnel, 30 m underground, for safety/survival. Vinh Moc Tunnels included family rooms, community halls, kitchens, wells, health clinics & a kindergarten. 60 families called it home from 1967-1972; 17 children were born inside it. Not a single person from Vinh Moc village died in the war.

      Built 30 metres below ground-level, #VinhMocTunnels had 13 openings of which seven opened out into the East Sea.

      @gemlog
      Thanks for reading my thread about our family's experiences in Vietnam & after we came to Canada & faced more racism here.
      As a very young kid - racism & hatred towards POC like me - was boggling. It took me awhile to learn why we were treated so awfully.
      I never want any kids to grow up hating anyone due to what they look like, where they came from - kids deserve to be surrounded by adults with humanity, not racial hatred. I consider racist parents as child abusers. Their kids deserve better guidance.

      @gemlog Weird tangent but yeah, I know many people can be racist. That's part of the reason why I chose to be estranged from some extended family who are racist & forgot where they came from & how hard our peoples fought for us.

      @gemlog No apologies needed. You had a need to express some of your feelings from your own lived experiences. There's no wrong, nothing to really apologize about that. I'm glad things eventually worked out for you.
