Publishing multiple videos in a row with record low views is kinda soul crushing.
That wouldn't be the case if I just talked about what is trending, or did angry takes to farm engagement.

*Sigh* I don't know what I'm doing anymore, but I'm going to keep doing it damnit.

I hate using their web interface. I use FreeTube so I only see things I subscribe too without recommendations. I made a tool that downloads videos (frontend for yt-dlp):

      https://gitlab.com/djsumdog/arcstreamsium

and then I watch them in a frontend I wrote for mpv:

      https://gitlab.com/djsumdog/mpvbuddy/

Makes YouTube way more tolerable, and helps me keep an archive to fight YouTube censorship

I don't think FreeTube uses yt-dlp. They have their own engine.

If you use my tool arcstreamism, it will automatically retry with a list of proxies.

@djsumdog @killyourfm @dm i have been using freetube and newpipe for ages but they both rely on yt-dlp, which youtube plays cat and mouse with. i don't have a youtube account and i don't plan to get one. i am currently stuck in the "sign in to prove you're not a bot" loop and my IP has been flagged so i swap vpn endpoints constantly and snag vids with pinchflat. super lame.

i am trying odysee and peertube but they lack content that interests me. i just got spoiled with the endless stream

@Zergling_man @djsumdog @killyourfm this is basically where i'm at but i reflexively reach for my freetube/newpipe feeds.

fomo for me i guess. i like nerdy shit and it's harder to find small creator nerdy shit on the other platforms.

@joeress But the fact that YT view numbers DO fluctuate so wildly makes it completely illogical that that's where all the sponsor money is. Right? Why not take the guaranteed, consistent numbers?

@killyourfm I think we talked about this when we recorded together just before Christmas but this is one of the many reasons why I don't do YouTube videos. The download numbers on the LNL Family podcasts are really consistent. Rarely more than 10 or 15 percent up or down, and gradually growing over time.

But I've been releasing episodes like clockwork on a set schedule for years. The YouTube algorithm *can* bless you with viral hits, but my winning formula is rather dull. Just gotta grind. 🤷♂️

@killyourfm that said, almost all the sponsor money is in YouTube these days so I get why people do it. It seems like it can definitely be worth it.

Yea there are still a lot of people I've watched for years who still put up interesting stuff. Repair videos from Adrian's Digital Basement are just great to have up on a side monitor while I'm coding. It's sad that there's basically only one big network where everyone posts their videos. It's quite a mono-culture and makes for a very unhealthy Internet.

@djsumdog @Zergling_man @killyourfm i've hit a point of "maybe i just don't watch youtube anymore" but it's hard not to have a scroll through the subscriptions tab on freetube

@killyourfm because the people sitting around watching YouTube videos can click tracked links to the sponsor much more easily than the people listening to podcasts while they drive to work where they earn money that they can spend on the advertised products and services which they search for when they remember to check them out.

No click means no entry in the spreadsheet, which means no dollars in the budget.

@joeress It seems the ultimate problem is they can't track conversion with a podcast, but it doesn't mean conversion isn't happening!

@killyourfm the negative ROI and the emotional toll the algorithm has been taking on me is just no longer worth it. Plus, "platform" has been getting shittier and shittier.

Conversely, the growth of The Bryant Review has been outstanding and the impact it has had has been deeply rewarding. I'm seeing my articles quoted by users and news sites, linkbacks... plus I get to flex my web design muscle to improve the reader experience. What more could I ask for?

@crazybutable There are so many incredible distros out there now. What kind of desktop paradigm do you prefer (Windows, macOS)? Will you be doing heavy gaming? Do you like to do heavy customization to your desktop? Do you want bleeding edge updates or boring and stable? :)

@killyourfm oh I’m looking to spin up a new Linux desktop and it would be fun to find out what’s out there

This will be my first Linux desktop in 20 years (if you don’t count the 5-6 months in 2015 when my PC broke and I was saving up for parts, so I only had a raspberry pi)

@crazybutable There are distributions that are gaming-focused, but honestly every current distribution can do gaming just fine. Some may take a bit more set up.

And KDE is absolutely phenomenal these days (including its default suite of apps). I can't recommend it highly enough. If Debian is your jam, nothing wrong with just sticking to it! Familiarity is good.

@killyourfm well I have half a mind to answer “xfce” but, ugh, I kinda don’t care, UI wise. I used to use KDE but it’s been years. Tempted to use Debian because that’s what I had back in the day.

Mostly what I want is raw editing. Is there a separate distribution for gaming?
