I'm not even dissing Unreal, I'm sure devs are just as capable of building something fun on it as Unity or anything else. Game engines are like the wheel, no need to reinvent it by scratch, but it also enables retards to build a trash cart on top of those wheels. -

@Hoss @Cocoa @brimshae the current iteration of Unreal is a marked step down. As you point out later in the thread there is definitely developer laziness and "too many cooks", but I'd also point to marketing/business having too much control over the release schedule (which the business people feel is reasonable because "we can just patch it in post"), and Unreal's tooling becoming more bloated/cumbersome/un-optimized (there are a lot of promises made about what it can do that just don't hold when they're scaled up to modern games rather than demo projects)
it's a giant trash heap of problems and more keep piling on from different departments as people try to cope with what's going on.
Like the "too many cooks" thing I think comes from wanting to scale up the games to feel "bigger and better" (since historically that's worked as a marketing thing, and you """need""" to play into it so your game sells well and you can keep paying people), so the studio starts scaling up the number of employees and throwing more manpower at it.
The business people say "patch in post" because, for a while, the audience was willing to accept small day 1 patches that didn't take long to download/install (obv not thrilled about it but willing to deal when it was "ok a minute or two I'll just grab a drink and it'll be done when I get back), and they don't really know another way to manage the schedule given that they only have so much money to pay people and they need the cash infusion of sales to keep things rolling.
I see things that would probably count as "developer laziness" that come out of those previous problems too (although there are the occasional problem employee where they literally just coast and try not to do anything same as w/ normal jobs). Like the "too many cooks" thing can cause some developers to become excessively cautious - they don't want to redo work that's already been done by someone else or step on someone's toes, and with organizations ballooning it can be hard to navigate the structure to figure out what's their responsibility and what's being handled by someone else. You also see people say "well I no longer have time to do this, so it has to be in a patch", rather than crunching to get something done for release, because the business people have already planned 4-5 official patches anyway, so why wouldn't you take advantage of it instead of killing yourself (especially when no one else is, so your extra work isn't going to be noticed, because everyone will complain about all the work your coworkers DIDN'T do)
I'm willing to bet all of the above is happening at Epic too, so I can't even really blame Unreal 5 too much for being the way it is.
one other thing I notice is that a lot of people in the industry don't seem to realize that the sequel to a game is effectively a public referendum on the previous title in the series, and that negative consequences of decisions made last time around don't always manifest until they bring a new game to market, so obvious lessons are missed until it's WAY too late to turn things around. So instead of learning from your mistakes and doing better next time, studios will keep trucking along until they hit a brick wall and die -
