I’m not in a part of the US with a Wegmans food market, but I always had the impression they were some of the good guys. And I just saw they still write about diversity and inclusion on their website when others have deleted that recently.

So why is Wegmans doing biometic scanning in some locations in NYC? The signage says says it’s to "protect the safety and security of our patrons and employees.” But how does it do that? It seems it could instead put them at risk if shared with organizations such as ICE. (The posted policy about sharing the information does not preclude such sharing, as long as it’s done for free.)

@cafechatnoir Damn — I didn't know Wegmans was anti-union. So now it has two strikes against it, in my estimation.

We have Wegman's here and it's a good grocery store, but pretty anti-union, which sucks. This biometric scanning is garbage - they're 110% gonna share it with law enforcement, I'm sure of it.

Yuck! How could it possibly protect anybody to be scanned? And what's in it for Wegman's unless they can somehow profit from the data? It must cost them something to do it. This sounds really malign to me.

@tc_morekindness The sign outside says, in part:
Facial Recognition • Eye Scans • Voiceprints
This is information that can be used to identify or help identify you. We use facial recognition technology to protect the safety and security of our patrons and employees, and do not lease, trade or otherwise profit from the transfer of biometric identifier information.

So I don't know how they profit from this. But yeah, is sure sounds malign to me.

@jeridansky @augieray @bicmay @Barbramon1 Ugh. And unfortunately masks don’t help with eyes and voices.

Wegmans is where we’ve done most of our food shopping for years.

@nancywisser Well, it’s only in NYC for now. Here’s hoping they get enough blowback that it doesn’t spread — and maybe ends there, too. But who knows?
