I need some validation because I'm feeling a little crazy.
Recently, I purchased some art from one of my favorite artists and she ended up following me on insta. She complimented my art and liked some of my posts and I felt really happy about that.
Then today I posted a story with a couple mini paintings/collages that I'm currently working on.
She then posted my story, to her 30k followings, saying I was stealing from her and copying her art...because she paints mini abstract paintings.

She blocked me and I blocked her and I didn't get a screenshot of her story, but it was similar to these messages.
For reference, I don't sell my art and I have 170 followers.
This is unhinged behavior, right?

Honestly, even if you were copying her style, the sheer difference of scale between your socials and the fact that you’re not selling your art is enough to make her behavior unacceptable in my opinion.

I would take this as a compliment. She sees your work as threating. Keep going and doing it. This is all about your work being good. She is threatened by it. Your talent has been validated.

Her reaction is funny to me in that there’s no way her style is unique. As anyone who’s studied art / art history knows “All art is derivative”, as Nina Paley said.

Sounds like the person has content brain. The earlier comments were probably just “do engagement” and didn’t register. And then when they did register, they noted vague similarities, and started shit for drama.

Yeah, there is a whole popular category of art called ACEO (art cards, editions, and originals) where painters paint trading card sized paintings to make their art more accessible to everyone. She did not start that. 😂

@mangotable Thank you so much. And very true. I follow many artists who have similar styles. The whole reason I was drawn to her work is because it's similar to what I like to create. I'm sure that's a common experience.

Yeah, she originally messaged me because I was her first customer in Japan. I even went out of my way to pay her more because *she* messed up the international shipping. And I bought one of her expensive books.
Finding out I am way too nice and should trust my gut when people give me weird vibes.

@softicecreamlesley I actually didn't know that, but it looks like you're right. Although wikipedia also mentions 10th century Japanese calligraphers, so it potentially goes waaaay back 😂
