@SuperDicq at this moment, youtube has the upscaled versions labeled "super resolution"
but yt-dlp doesn't seem to indicate this yet, i hope someone patches it in soon :cat_look:

@cell@shitposter.world I don't want to know what Google's proprietary AI thinks my favorite 15 year old videos look like. I just want the real thing and hopefully they don't remove the originals at some point, but never trust Youtube.

@cell@shitposter.world Youtube's monopoly on online video is extremely annoying but a sad reality, but nobody has the capacity to make a backup of the entirety of Youtube...

I at least try to save videos that are important to me personally.

@SuperDicq @cell does youtube even keep the original files? A 480p video uploaded 15 years ago probably looks worse now that it did then.

@Pi_rat@shitposter.world @cell@shitposter.world Anyways I do upload my gaming videos on Youtube. I know it's bad but I do try my best to direct my Youtube viewers away from Youtube and I ask them to watch me on Peertube and Owncast instead.

So me having to run the proprietary youtube frontend once in a while to upload something isn't so bad because these actions result in directing more people towards using free software in the long run, at least that's how I see it.

@Pi_rat@shitposter.world @cell@shitposter.world But yeah it is indeed a very bold move to just start adding AI generated audio dubs to people's videos without asking or notifying them about it.

What about liability? These unapproved audio tracks could potentially change the meaning of the words said in the video.

Literally putting words into your mouth that might be things you never said...

Maybe at some point I should pivot towards becoming a tech channel but I don't know if I wanna be one of those "tech youtubers", man.

I mean we don't have any free software "influencers". They simply do not exist. Maybe we need one... But who wants to make that sacrifice?

This is a particular annoyance for me. Most linux newbies haven't even heard of GNU, and if they have they've usually heard second hand that GNU/FSF supporters are 'extremists' in the software community and only hinder the progress of linux.
It's a very common insight, especially (funnily enough) on propreitary platforms like Reddit or Discord.

@yomiel@new.asbestos.cafe @Pi_rat@shitposter.world @cell@shitposter.world That's why I proposed we might need a free software influencer who can actually talk to these people on these kinds of platforms.

Because right now none of the free software people go there in the first place (for good reason), but that also means that the message on there is essentially only controlled by "open source" antis.

@SuperDicq @cell @Pi_rat @yomiel @Pi_rat There is no such thing as a non-GNU distro - you cannot compile Linux without GNU make, GNU binutils, GNU bash, GNU bc, GNU cpio, GNU tar and GNU bison (quite literally inserts GNU code) and you cannot compile and use most other software without GNU libraries.

There is BusyBox/Linux and GNU/Linux and Android - but they all have GNU - although some lack standalone GNU packages by default and therefore suck until you install the missing parts of GNU.

@SuperDicq @cell @Pi_rat @yomiel @Pi_rat If it contains a lot of GNU, how is it not a GNU OS?

Something can be a improper GNU operating system, with the especially good parts of GNU swapped out with inferior implementations.

Even BusyBox contains quite a bit of code copy-pasted from GNU and Alpine uses other GNU packages, which makes Alpine clearly GNU/Linux, but I do prefer referring to it as BusyBox/Linux, as it's sad compared to a proper GNU/Linux distro.

You prefer referring to Alpine as BusyBox/Linux despite it containing some GNU. Why? Because calling it the GNU operating system would be incorrect because despite it containing parts of GNU it's not a full GNU operating system.

If you take only small parts of an operating system, like packages or small snippets of code, you no longer have a full operating system.

@pernia @Pi_rat @SuperDicq @yomiel @Pi_rat @cell Chimera is a GNU/Linux distro, except it happens to use musl instead of glibc and NonFreeBSD coreutils instead of coreutils (a whole 2 GNU packages).

They use GCC, but to be edgy, they likely compile Linux with clang (I don't think clang can compile all parts of Linux, but it can compile the core AMD64 and Aarch64 parts).

You need to have several GNU dependencies installed if you want to build Linux.
