@Inginsub Well new chapters of tobyslop were enough to crash Steam payment processing for a minute, but apart from it I don't even remember any notable releases. Though of YIIK I.V but turns out it came in December. :ihavenomouth: and ✙ dcc :pedomustdie: :phear_slackware: like this. -

@Inginsub how are idle and incremental even genres? Would people just idly watch numbers increment now? :ihavenomouth: likes this. -

@icst yes, apparently. incremental games are more like roguelikes, but with the rogue part dropped entirely and based entirely around meta-progression instead of skill.
we've been getting a lot of both genres ever since ai coding became a thing, and i don't think that's a coincidence -

@Originalboy2 @yomiel it's the same problem as with a lot of incremental games: the developer puts in a lot of upgrades that may or may not synergize with each other, and either doesn't balance it at all or balances it by making difficulty levels increase enemy health or shields. Most of those games aren't fun to play at all or are only fun by accident. Some really lean into making game-breaking builds and have unique mechanics for that, like Diceomancer, but usually it feels like there's a unity preset that only requires you to drop assets into the editor and input the stat numbers. -

@yomiel @Inginsub
thats a great point i didnt think about.
i think a point to add to that is that the strategy in most indie card games is just do mental math to get the biggest number during your turn, but good card games don't make you do mental math until after the real strategy of the game occurs. In Magic it's bluffing and pushing, and in yugioh it's making and breaking boards. -

There's also the fact that 90% of the fun of a game like Yu-Gi-Oh! or Magic is playing your opponent, especially in Yu-Gi-Oh!
Not as fun to 'play' a computer, much less random fodder enemies. -

@yomiel @Inginsub but i also find a lot of indie deckbuilders uninspired and boring because they aren't unique enough and just copy the same tried-and-true mechanics like mana or what cards can do -

sorry for wall of text btw...
they are simple to design but lead to complex gameplay (emergent design).
They are highly replayable games and it's hard to do that quickly as a small indie team for most other game genres.
It also gives you the same satisfaction that one gets from puzzle games. The puzzles are just presented differently (both deckbuilding and sequencing when playing cards).
I should let you know though that I am extremely biased when it comes to this topic because I've done a lot of studying on the genre and my favorite game is yugioh... -
