    I have a teenage daughter so via social osmosis I have far more knowledge of #KPop than I should

    I also hear stories of abusive, toxic fans and management in the K-Pop #music machine

    It's alarming

    So this is good to see:

    "Former Teen Top member #BangMinsu, better known by his stage name C.A.P, has been appointed head of the preparatory committee for #Korea’s first-ever idol #labor #union- a move that could reshape how the K-pop industry addresses #artists’ #rights"

      @rozeboosje One of the really sad things about the 2016 US election was that society WAS moving towards a kinder direction. Bigots knew to be quiet in public. Kids were happy in schools: gay, trans students, so what? Another generation of that would've been amazing, with those kids growing up in that. Then...the orange rapist came along, encouraging & allowing people to say the quiet parts out out, to be the worst versions of themselves, it's been catching worldwide. :( @benroyce @Pineywoozle

      @benroyce @rozeboosje @Pineywoozle There are thoughts you say, and thoughts you don't say. No one has a right to an audience. Most countries have hate speech laws: if you are saying things that could trigger violence against others, you do not deserve a platform to fan that violence.

      "Ultimately even those with the vilest possible opinions should be able to express them"

      nope

      if someone is a bigot, nuke their fucking account, period, end of story

      there is nothing, absolutely nothing, gained by allowing bigotry a voice anywhere, at any time

      bigotry is not free speech: when it is spoken, it destroys freedom. censor the ever loving fucking shit out of it. this is the only way. that is my sincere belief

      @benroyce The positive side of the internet has been for marginalized communities finally having a voice: Indigenous folk, gay/trans, Black, etc. That is a genie we don't want to put into the bottle. I really wish schools were more involved in teaching kids about the internet and how to be aware of taking care of themselves and protecting themselves from being exploited by people with agendas that aren't in their best interests. @Pineywoozle

      @CStamp @Pineywoozle

      we need social media with *strong* moderation

      it's why we're both here on mastodon

      not saying mastodon doesn't have problems, but people have to admit the kind of straight up vicious bigotry that is legion elsewhere, and accepted, and promoted, is severely tampered here

      @benroyce @CStamp @Pineywoozle There is a balance to be struck. Ultimately even those with the vilest possible opinions should be able to express them, but that is why it is even more important that those who do not wish to be exposed to them need effective, easily accessible ways to shield themselves from them. If protecting oneself from trolls, fascists and other scum becomes an exercise in mopping the floor while the tap's still running moderation is not good enough. It seems better here.

      @Pineywoozle

      lately the abuse by #trolls is fucking insane

      example:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_pinching_conspiracy_theory

      "men's rights" "activists" become outraged by #4chan style manufactured bullshit on #socialMedia

      trolls comb through video and photos to find a woman #kpop idol who, while simply moving their hands, it sort-of seems she is making this gesture:

      🤏

      (denoting a small penis)

      of course, this is never the idol's intention

      it's for feeding the insecurities of toxic assholes who think they "own" the idol

      @benroyce @Pineywoozle I wish people raised their boys better instead of leaving them at the mercy for these incels.

      @CStamp @Pineywoozle

      it used to be more isolated

      but, as part of the story with bigotry in all its forms and social media, it has metastasized into a potent toxic stew of creepy abusive entitled shitbags

      they enjoy it

      they get off on it

      power and control

      @benroyce At the beginning of internet, a concern was that it would allow pedophiles to normalize themselves, as instead of being isolated and knowing they were abnormal, now they would find community and justify their behaviour. Social media is allowing the conspiracy theorists, incels, etc. to find their communities, which makes those things a bigger problem. The dark side of the web, though in plain site. :( @Pineywoozle

      @benroyce That is good news. Artists of all kinds are notoriously easy prey. We want so badly to create that we overlook some pretty obvious pitfalls.
