We’ve thought carefully about building this feature, and we hope it broadens your use of Mastodon!
However, you're in control: if you don’t want your content to be quoted, you can find the setting to prevent future quotes of your content under Settings -> Preferences -> Other (in Mastodon 4.4).

@Mastodon i don’t understand why this took so long.
the worries that this could be used to make negative comments about others post are completely out of reality, because this can also be achieved by posting it as a link or posting a screenshot.
on other platforms that is handled quite simply: if somebody does a repost that you don’t like, block the account and done.
Actually, then they still can post links or screenshots with negative comments because thats anyway completely unavoidable.

@Mastodon What were the arguments for "quoting text above quoted post" over "quoting text below quoted post"? This is going to create a "dunk culture" on Mastodon with no upside beyond "works how it does on [toxic platforms that Mastodon positions itself as a better alternative to]".
What is your plan for dealing with the cultural problems this will create? "You can disable quotes, but it won't retroactively remove your post from a harasser's timeline" is bolting the door too late.

@Mastodon Why did you adopt opt-out as the default? Is it correct to understand that because of your previous blog post ("Bringing Quote Posts to Mastodon"), you changed to a social networking site where anyone is basically free to quote?

@duc @Mastodon It's always been a SNS. But we've lived in a world without a quote function. If an opt-out quote function were implemented, wouldn't that change the world? Of course, nothing would change in terms of it being a SNS.
Personally, I don't mind if it becomes a SNS with a quote function. However, while "Bringing Quote Posts to Mastodon" describes the background, I felt it didn't mention that it had changed the world. I feel like what we need is a new, modern Cage the Mastdon.

@k_taka Mastodon has always positioned itself as a social networking platform all along (it even says it on @Mastodon's bio)? What did I miss?
Even as a microblogging platform, the ability to share other person's post and have it appear natively in the feed is nice (and you have the option to remove yourself from the quoting posts), compared to the alternatives like sharing links and screenshots of posts.
Also, genuinely curious, why should it be opted-in?

@CelianGodefroid thanks for the positive words on the feature. We did consider opt-in/out, absolutely. Important note: defaults for post visibility and quotability only impact *future* posts. This means your past posts cannot be quoted. This is different from toggling profile discovery, which has an immediate impact. We're providing an early heads-up for people on these two servers (and anyone on 4.4.x elsewhere) that they can set their default visibility now, to prevent being quoted in future.

@Mastodon That's great and I like the feature, but have you given thought to making quote-posts opt-in and not opt-out ? I really feel like opt-out is a mistake... You've made many things opt-in, like search discoverability, why not this ?
