Over the last year lost a lot of users to other servers. The number of people who care about this site are probably in the single or low double digits now.

I think a lot of it is down to the Fediverse in general. I’m less enthusiastic because the war is over between the blocking and non blocking sides and it was a draw. Now I’m stuck muting every repetitive fed and every retard who thinks posting in the same thread means you’re trying to argue with him. And even if I don’t follow them they usually have enough mutual to be in all the same threads.

@sun At least part of the reason is that fedi became less interesting even before SPC died. When you compare 2021 fedi and 2025 fedi, the differences are quite large. It suffered the same way basically all social media did since then, but since the network is much smaller and now basically torn in half, the differences are more visible. People changed.

And it doesn't help that getting new people on here almost always made everything worse (the multiple Twitter refugee waves) and is also hard since very good few instances have open registrations.

@phnt I am thinking a lot about pre-emptive retaliatory blocks on new servers to make it intentional that we're two different networks now. there's no real loss, anybody can have a presence on both sides with different personas but it's grating to share the network with some people. the problem may not be that they were wrogn about preemptive blocking but simply that they are inconsistent and assholes

@sun Unsolicited/retard opinion: "This side of fedi" used to be more fun and I consider SPC to have been a big part of what made that so. SPC was largely made up of people who had hobbies other than politics. The sneed-to-fun ratio has gone up a lot in the wake of mass-defederations and admins giving up on instances due to pleroma bs. It leaves a greater concentration of 24/7 politiposting spergs who are frankly not fun to be around. So the people who want to chill out but also say nigger leave for Discord, and the people who considered free-speech to not be worth the loss of talking to their friends on Mastodon, have left for the cucked fedi.
The proliferation of block-lists has a lot to do with this as well. There would ideally be more "in-between"/grey fedi instances to diffuse the sneed. It's also a "new blood" problem. People who might have been NEETS or students a few years ago now have jobs and increasing responsibilities and they aren't being replaced (especially affects admins).
Anyway, for what it's worth, while I've never been a SPC/SPW main user, I consider it very important to the "health" of fedi - almost a canary in the coalmine of sorts. I don't think it's a case of SPW doing poorly, but rather this side of the fediverse as whole. I don't know what the answer is. There's definitely more I could do to help and I feel a little guilty about it, as gay as that sounds. Just not a lot of time.

@sun Mass instance defederations don't solve anything and only make things worse. Broken threads due to defederations are one of the larger frustrations I have. It makes interaction much harder when 90% of remote instances have thread viewing to unauthenticated users disabled. Weirdly, this seems to be only a Pleroma/GTS issue as I've seen very little Mastodon instances disabling that access.

One edge case is mutual defederations which can work, but you are also making the broken thread problem even larger when someone else on another instance replies to them. Now you have a thread with even less context to interact with, provided that you can fetch OP (now you usually can't anyway). And of course if you want to prevent that, then you whip out the mention MRF policy and dig yourself into an even deeper hole. The snow effect of "Why is my TWKN empty." In my opinion, defederations should only be used to block illegal content, and blocking instances that have zero value in them if they get annoying to deal with. Blocking instances that already defederate you is a double-edged sword and probably should only be done for very large instances.

Of course the question of why reply when they can't see you anyway is valid, but even a single reply can still start an interesting thread even if OP instance can't see half of the replies. But you are having a discussion/fun in a thread, and now the broken thread problem is their issue and not yours. Overall, I prefer the live and let live way of thinking about fediblockers and their orbiters. They won't stop and they won't change their minds, so why care about them. Why care about/try to solve something you inherently cannot change. They already can't enter this side of the network, because they'll get laughed out in a day. You won't stop people entering their orbit either, so the only logical way to solve that in my mind is also being open to new people like that. Which also creates the problem of assimilating people from Twitter and Bluesky which have a tendency to turn everything into some kind of political statement. I don't have a solution to that problem besides ignoring those people, or trying to explain to them somehow that this isn't welcome here while not making it a concrete rule which will make the "your moderation is biased/stupid crowd" very loud.

As for how to bring the energy back. The Internet as a whole has lost its originality, everything got turned into the same old boring argument or meme format. So maybe try to bring that back in some way. Have fun and in my case don't interact with politics as much as possible. Be the fediverse you want it to be, and when something is missing try to bring it back in some way. And when enough people will do that, I think the energy will at least in some way come back.

I'd also like to open registrations again but I want to get a server with more space first (next year) and have systems in place that make monitoring that easier. First I need to stay on top of maintaining what I have though.

@sun and with time we will get there because of that -- which is not a bad thing

there's only really 2 options spw users all
      1) slowly but surely migrate to other instances
      2) die
      3) quit using the fediverse generally (this is the really sad one imho)

i'm seeing some of #1 happening but like
it's ok for SPW to shrink a little bit to something more managable and for the complexity to fall with it we're rooting for SPW to survive and @sun to thrive out here.

( rooting for @Ree too but you know what i mean)

@sun I hope I'm being counted as one of them, even though I've been quite busy and haven't posted here as much as I used to in the last year.

@sun @phnt The big elephant in the room is that there's a social media network with an algorithm that if you like certain posts, won't deliver you political ragebait (poastie or mastodon/bsky style) and will deliver you more of what you want. Do you want Pokemon fanart? The Algorithm will dripfeed that shit like it's an IV, and won't even dump unsolicited porn on your timeline.

Meanwhile the powerusers end up on single user instances because they'll take longer to get blocked by some shitty admin who imports in a blocklist and can interact with the network for longer.

@sendpaws @phnt @sun and the moment your single user instance is noticed and blocked due to not blocking what they don't like, you're back at square one, lmfao

@mischievoustomato @phnt @sun depends they seem to be less mad about that these days it depends on how far you go into the mastodon circle and if you're liked
