@lain I don't trust used ipods, they sell for too much and one I ordered had a capacitor for its charger break and start melting the ipod face as it turned red hot. That was a refurb...

Idk I simply want something with no touchscreen and an sd slot.. I'd love a zune, in reality that would be fun

@jesu the problem with these enthusiast DAPs is that so few people buy them and those that do buy mostly for specs (source: I have a few). UI is horrible and they are built like tanks, which somewhat defeats the purpose of having a mobile player. I still have a few sandisk clips at my parents' place, those were the best.

@sun they really were amazing. every time i see a new open source music player being announced that looks ultra ugly and is larger than any phone on the market while having 6 hours of battery life i cringe. There are two players to beat: The iPod and the Sandisk. As far as I can see, nobody even comes close.

@lain open hardware these days is like some kind of hobbyist thing now, like I have a dozen small custom hardware thingies. It's pretty incredible that that's possible now even if the actual product is often pointless

@sun i think the best open hardware / small hardware stuff are all the console mods that you can do these days, they really are better than the originals.

@lain There are two separate replacement dreamcast VMUs, I waited a year and a half for one of them, the other is out now and I'm buying both.

@sun @lain I am. I'm listening to downloaded podcasts on mine right now (at work). though SanDisk stopped making them 15 years ago, and I might need to find an electronics repair shop that will put in a new battery and headphone jack into ancient technology.

@noyoushutthefuckupdad @sun My father-in-law is an engineer. He is insanely gifted. We were looking at a Sandisk together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to build it today. I will never forget his answer… 'We can’t, we don’t know how to do it.'
