It's hard to explain to people who haven't been there the problems with socializing when you're disabled. There are basically 3 kinds of people:
The ones who think you need help when you don't
The ones who are afraid to talk to you. Oddly enough there's a lot of overlap. That would be the people who think helping you is the only way to interact with you but otherwise don't talk to you.
And the ones who want to pray for you.

@Fragglemuppet or the very rare 4th catagory, the ones who are your friends that don't even mention your disability and just hang with you anyway.

@gocu54 Yeah, except that tagalong feeling isn't great, either. It's still different than just being one of them. I had a brief time in my life where I really felt part of a friend group, in my first college.

@Fragglemuppet Those people are my favorite. Sure, the first time they meet you they ask questions and then after all is answered, they don't mention it and just let you tag along when hanging out, super fun.

They are the least common type, thank goodness. Maybe that has a bit to do with me refusing to set foot into Walmart unless I have no other option.

@Fragglemuppet Pretty much the same as my wife's experience having mobility difficulties - except in the UK we rarely get the prayer monkeys!

@gocu54 It's when someone invites you to come along with them, almost drags you in fact, but then them and their friends are sort of doing their own thing and all but forgetting that you're there.

The reason I made this post is that when someone comes along and says, "why don't you just go and hang out and talk to people? That's why.

@ity @gocu54 Oh I'm sure there are. The part I forgot to mention though is when you're tagging along it's with other peoples' friends, not your own.

@Fragglemuppet @gocu54 are there gatherings of groups that aren't like that? I thought that's just how friend gatherings are, so I never go to groups and always at the first opportunity drag someone away from the group to exist 1:1 with when possible
