@Mrfunkedude @zalasur This line of analysis is silly and the conclusion is wrong. No, they could not get a connectivity provider to drop them, or even if they could it wouldn't even matter because there are countless others to move to without any interruption. What's relevant is that they wouldn't have to.

The only reason Colbert is relevant and the only reason they could cancel him was that he operates within the system of capitalist media with capitalist incentives and reaches the audience who deems that prestigious and authoritative.

It's useful that there are people doing mildly subversive things within that system as long as they can, but take them out of that and put them on the fedi and they're just the more boring, least radical person here.

@zalasur It’s not just that. I mean, if an administration can force a network to drop a show, how hard do you think it would be for them to get a server provider to stop hosting them if they jumped to PeerTube or wherever? Even if they hosted in a foreign country, all the administration would have to do is get your ISP to block it.

@Mrfunkedude Yeah, as much as I'd like to see Peertube be a solid choice for this type of situation, the biggest problem is you have to pay for your infrastructure. Commercial platforms get away with providing their services for "free" with the help of advertising revenue.

People who are suggesting that the Colbert show and others who are being pressured out by the current administration, should then start up a PeerTube instance and figure out a way to monetize it, either have no idea how a show like Colbert is funded, or have no idea how PeerTube works and what it’s purpose is.

I mean, essentially what you’re suggesting is that a five star Michelin restaurant close their doors and start handing out food on the corner for tips.

      Really?
