    If you give ground when you are right it makes it seem like maybe you are wrong to people who haven't made up their minds, it vindicates people who are wrong and it makes you look weak.

    (This also kind of works when you are wrong... but *think* you are right... or if you are very good at lying. Which complicates it a bit.)

    Nonetheless, it's not possible to have one set of stances for one part of the public and a different one for another. Everyone will find out.

      Some Democrats still keep trying to do this. It's OK to just make a few people mad about one idea that you stand up for that they don't really get. We all have to compromise when voting. But it's the worst feeling when you don't even know how much you are compromising. It's shifty and untrustworthy. Inauthentic.

      @futurebird @CoolerPseudonym Because the people who pay for their campaigns hate those things, and that's selected for a deplorable minority in positions of power in the party who are aligned with the people who pay for campaigns.

      @CoolerPseudonym

      But centrist democrats really really hate the issues where in theory they could make up the most ground.

      Like raising taxes on the rich and healthcare which are wildly popular.

      @futurebird Which is pretty weird when you realize that a strong majority favors their policies. They are utterly in the wilderness

      @futurebird Democrats make it easy to research candidates. If they support Isntreal's genocide of the Palestinians, or are silent, then my research is done. Zero reason to look at their support for any other policy.

      @Fat_Farang @futurebird The whole point of research is identifying the axes on which there is a meaningful difference between the options. If you stop as soon as you see no meaningful difference on one issue you care about (and even then, it's willful ignorance not to see a difference between "we want to accelerate genocide for the sake of Armageddon!" and "we just won't challenge the status quo"), you abdicate any power you had to affect other issues where there is a meaningful difference.

      @Fat_Farang @futurebird The perspective of a vote as something you "give them" rather than an act of choosing your adversary like you might do on the select screen in a fighting game is unhelpful to making change.

      @dalias @futurebird My moral compass says anyone willing to support, or tries to justify thru gaslighting, a genocide does not deserve my vote. There is no nuance, no compromise. Who wants to exercise power that is dependent on the slaughter of thousands of women and children?

      If I "compromise" on this issue, what's next? Toss trans people under the bus so the party gains more seats? Human rights are nonnegotiable as they are the foundation for all other policy.

      @Fat_Farang @dalias @futurebird Voting against the duopoly has always worked out to help the fascist party. But some people who claim to be antifascist still promote it. Go figure.

      @Fat_Farang @dalias @futurebird Understandable that you don't want to admit to yourself that you've given fascism a boost. All the kids starving without USAID admire your moral purity. All the people being disappeared by ICE likewise. LGBTQ giving you thumbs up from under the bus.

      @jhavok @dalias @futurebird Fascism has been on the rise in the US since the end of WW2, so every white 'murikkkan voting for the duopoly has been responsible. Trump is just the latest useful idiot in a long line of useful idiots.

      @Fat_Farang @dalias @futurebird Yeah, that attitude worked out well, didn't it? American mercenaries are shooting Palestinians now. People are being sent to gulags for protesting. Have you declared a moral victory yet?
