  As long as medicine continues to see autism as a disorder, a mistaken deviation from the norm, people will continue to see it as a problem to be solved, rather than as a difference to be understood.
  Autistic people are more vulnerable to a range of health issues, and the possibility that we could address this aspect of autism is actually encouraging. (Obviously we would also need to acknowledge that some of our health issues are indirect consequences of stress due to inadequate accommodations etc.) It would allow more autistic people to lead more fulfilling lives. But when autism itself is seen as a disorder to be fixed, as something to be understood in purely negative terms…
  I know it’s wrong to evaluate people in terms of what contributions they make to society. But imagine how much more autistic people could do & be recognised as doing if we were seen as worth supporting & accommodating?
  Of course the same could be said with regard to all human beings. Properly supporting and accommodating everyone’s needs and potential should be a goal of all societies and would benefit every individual and all communities. But is unlikely to happen, unless maybe if autistic people were in charge… Utopian thoughts.

  The thing is, motorcycles and cars don’t have to be noisy. Even F1s aren’t as noisy as they used to be. The noise is all part of the compensatory effect of big/powerful vehicles.,

  The sensible solution here would be to market a vacuum cleaner that is powerful AND quiet. I’d say it’s more about capitalist motives dominated by alpha male/wannabe alpha male attitudes more than an issue of neurotypicals.

  How phones with user removable batteries became about as rare as the DoDo.
  How fridges and washing machines started requiring apps.
  How TVs became spy devices.

  I don’t think all alpha males are sexist pricks. But the ones who like noisy motors/engines etc might be. You do have a point, but I suspect many women would appreciate a quiet but powerful vacuum cleaner.

  Just as an FYI: Electric Lawn Mowers, weed whackers, and leaf blowers are amazing. I would HATE having to mow with a gas mower but our electric one is just the sound of the blade spinning through the air and whacking blades of grass. It's so SO much quieter.
  We have an electric leaf blower. That is still a bit loud, but it's just the sound of a powerful fan not the engine.
  The weed whacker is similar. sound of "string" hitting grass but that's it.

  @masukomi @actuallyautistic I'm hoping to convince the roommates to replace our wretched piece of shit. They fight with it constantly (oddly, I can get to work without jamming open safeties, and on 1 or 2 pulls). Less torture for me, less frustration for them, we need an electric.
