It’s hard for us in the UK to understand the whole gun culture thing in the US.
Here it’s not usual to own a gun unless you’re rich, a farmer or a criminal.
Our police are not normally armed with anything more than a taser - it’s a surprise on the rare occasions we see armed officers.
I regret that y’all have to carry firearms, but if it acts as a deterrent then who am I to judge.
I would say that it’s 100% easier to shoot someone by mistake with a gun than without though & if there are guns around the house with youngsters then kids will be kids no matter how many times they are told not to touch.
All that said, you & yours are trapped it seems, the NRA will ensure that guns are always available and racism is rife in the US so you will always be under threat.
@morre@Jaden3 that statistic doesn't include how many times simply brandishing a firearm is sufficient. Nothing is scarier than the sound of a pump action shotgun.
@Jaden3 if I remember the stats right, everybody is more likely to kill accidentally with their own gun than needing it to defend themselves. That informs all my decisions around it.
Besides statistics, the whole concept that people can just have guns because they want is batshit crazy to me.
I know no one who has one.
Then again, Germany is extremely different and I’m a privileged white dude.
@cxxvii@Jaden3 In America they need to have a reason, its called "fuck you king George" and it should only be used for "whatever the fuck you want as long as its not helping King George"
@Jaden3 In Australia, guns are regulated strongly i think. Basically you need a reason to use a gun, and the gun needs to be only for that usage. This means that if you're not looking hard, the only place you'll see guns is on a farm, around police/military/security, and if you go to a recreational gun place. of course doesn't count the 20-year old rifles under the floorboards :P
Not suprised about carry in Usa though, if anyone wants an hour long video documentry thing that tells a suprisingly in-depth story of racism in America, see "Birth of A Nation: The First Superhero Film (The Racist Origins of Superhero Films (Is Batman Facist?))"
@Jaden3 White people do it too, in far greater numbers, but they are exempt from scrutiny. If not, there wouldn't be so many concealed carry carve outs. Why do you need to take your gun to the cancer hospital in Texas? I dunno, but it means I have to get training on procedures for when someone accidentally leaves their gun in the bathroom of the hospital because that's what people do.
@notthatkindofdoctor@Jaden3 I went to a wedding in Oklahoma and the guy in front of me was packing. I asked him what he was so afraid of, told me he wasn't sure, but her heard some of the in-laws might be Democrats.
@Jaden3 The thing that radicalized me against cops, back in my 20s (1990s) working downtown Pittsburgh at night, was watching cops harassing black guys for no reason at all. Every night. Stopping and frisking, hollering and bullying. All rough like they were big tough hard asses, armed to the teeth, with the power of state violence behind them. Hassling teenagers just for hanging out. Daring them to look at them funny so they could shoot them for fun. Night after fucking night. Fuckn assholes
@Anudar@Jaden3 the idea that there is a "knife carrying problem" and the problem is not that you went somewhere and needed to cut something and no one had a knife is just mind boggling.
@Jaden3 in France, few people own and carry guns. We may have a rising knife carrying problem, but it's not even sure. Violent crime exists however, most of the time linked to drug trafficking (and to politics historically, during the '70s for example).
What I mean is that gun-carrying is quite foreign to some other cultures outside of the US. Most european people (including me) would in fact be uncomfortable around any gun-carrying person. I understand your point however. Cultural differences.
@Jaden3@MAJ1 where are you able to find guns that are easy to buy? Every state I've lived its like a several day process, you gotta fill out a bunch of forms and shit.
That's the main reason I have as many guns as I do, even though I haven't shot any for over a decade. Its just too much hassle to get rid of them.
