I can't even get away from it with some amount of confidence:
- SMS isn't an option -- the Chinese are inside the grid - XMPP is extremely unfriendly to new users - Matrix is a mixed bag, official implementation is the Google Chrome of the Matrix world - IRC is too dated, it has none of the modern features Discord people like, like no permanent channels out of the box
Listen, I've stated my hatred for Discord multiple times, I have tried to get friends off of it for *years* nothing fucking works. You can go ahead and look at me as a chud if you really want, but I'm a normal person and I expect others would probably experience very similar experiences if they try converting their friends away from Discord.
@denza252 I unironically had some less savvy friends use that and somehow they couldn't figure out changing their name without /nick'ing manually every time they signed into my IRC. It was really silly.
@Jojothegoodperson XMPP isn't bad if you have at least a minor knack for computers, but getting others used to it was an unexpected challenge, like there's basically no clients for iOS and having to tell people what a 'domain' is because some clients straight up ask you what your server is by asking what your domain is, is tedious.
@nyanide@denza252 I mean discord is extremely popular, just like google chrome, youtube and stuff like that. And it's impossible for a lot of people to leave when all of their friends are on discord and they don't wanna leave them for another website. I tried out matrix, it has the worst people on it that I could think of, with discord you can get a mixed of both, but it has a really good community at least to me
@nyanide actually popular as alternatives: telegram, maybe signal a little bit, previously skype (rip) ig irc is actually popular also but yeah too dated for normies and zoomies. permanent channels is probably the least of your issues though, id argue the need for a bouncer for history and no inline upload is what is more of an issue for these types
@maija I'd probably consider telegram some more cause at least their client is FOSS but Moth (rip) and Gleason got banned from it with no obvious reason so, bit scary.
@Jojothegoodperson@nyanide yeah like privacy is important but revealed preferences show people value convenience more, and dislodging established players is tough. Not to mention, it's a self-reinforcing thing where the bigger some platform gets the harder it is to move off since "nobody else is there"
@denza252@nyanide And tbh people don't care about their privacy anymore, even though after what happened with this elections, it's more important than ever before
@denza252@nyanide Well compared to matrix and xmpp, where you can enable end to end encryption which requires both parties to verify. And it's not popular because it's doesn't have a sense of community, except for those that are very interesting in linux like me for example. And omg kde plasma is awesome
@denza252@Jojothegoodperson Not like I care about it all that much too, if I were concerned about it I would be like sysrq would be all over Tor. I just wish people would move to something that's not Discord and that's not run by a corporation.
@nyanide ive heard people complain about false bans but honestly most ive known have never had such issue as much as other platforms, and certainly telegram barely enforces their rules
@denza252@Jojothegoodperson Aside: I tried self hosting Revolt actually, and that's a mess of a project, like there's no admin panel out of the gate so you have to deal with MongoDB hell, when I installed it a part of revolt was just straight up broken, they don't support self hosting without a docker container really. Absolute shitshow of a project.
@nyanide@lab.nyanide.com It's literally email with GPG but in a fancy chatlike client. The protocol is so simple it almost makes all other chat client look stupid and overcomplicated.
You can disable the bouncer feature and have just a web client, see https://demo.thelounge.chat/ . But you probably want a bouncer for your friends anyways if you tried to replace Discord with IRC anyways. No fucking idea if it has an "app for iOS" (maybe it being a PWA is enough to get a home screen icon?).
@authen A couple of companies have just taken the standard and used it as a base for their own thing. Wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened with WhatsApp initially. Definitely doesn't federate.
@nyanide >Matrix is a mixed bag once you actually get a room up and people on it it seems to work alright but trying to get past that verification shit with friends is literally one of the most frustrating processes I've ever experienced in my life. It is only through the power of our mutual autism that we endured just so we could have fucking voice chat on a game sever
@nyanide - simplex not even mentioned 🥀 is it over simplexbros? is this recoverable? no, you cant even see that its actually dead because ur smp server is down. who are you replying to FragrantBalloon? I cant see their messages. it is unequivocally over.
@nyanide how do you convert others to anything that isn't discord when everything else will eventually have some meme broken moment and your friends will point out "this just works on discord".
Wanna know the real discord competitor though? Telegram.
@nyanide@maija they have strict spam shit on it. Me and friends have been on there without issue but @fwc got banned for no apparent reason either. Still, it's the closest "just works" experience you'll get.
@Jojothegoodperson@nyanide so the bare minimum they can legally get away with providing while running the service? as little as signal tells you? literally just easily mitigated metadata? cool
@RustyCrab@nyanide We had issues with matrix so we relied on steam's voice chat feature and it seemed to work fine. I logged back in to my account and for some reason device verification is broken. Who do I blame? The phone app? The laptop app? The instance? The instance server software? who knows!
@nyanide I struggled to even get most of the team who made my game on to discord and off Facebook. I had to make another Facebook account to keep in contact with them. Most people really do not want to download another thing even if the thing they currently use isn't the best
