    Although they take physical space, find I am more apt to buy (physical) books again, especially reference books, because my ability to find good information on the web is declining rapidly. Probably 80% of my searches are ending on grey-goo now, and if you use any mainstream search engine they are feeding you tidbits of stolen information via AI (also essentially grey goo, with no additional information or references).

    I now preferentially use YouTube, Wikipedia, and Google Books to find information, instead of any search engine. (because of the likelihood of running into crap).

    (Search for "widgets" and you're likely to get 5 pages of "The history of widgets is interesting. Let me tell you a little bit about widgets. Experts don't agree on what this widget does, but we can talk about the various ways this widget might be used. Blah blah blah.")

      @wollman @EugestShirley @MsMerope @ai6yr I strongly recommend the Cook's Country cookbook which comes out of the America's Test Kitchen. Very refined recipes in there.

      And then of course, it's always good to have Mastering The Art of French Cooking around

      @MsMerope @ai6yr
      Do you remember which ones you had liked?

      My first favorite was "Joy of Cooking." People sneer at it, but it tells you how to do things.

      My least favorite was the one I bought when leaving for college.
      Catch a deer, skin it, cook it.
      Um, not enough details there for a new cook who had a single 2 qt. pot, one knife, one stir spoon.

      @EugestShirley @MsMerope @ai6yr I have about a hundred cookbooks, but I am very lazy and do little scratch cooking, so the ones I use most are baking books. (Some of them, like Joanne Chang's FLOUR and FLOUR TOO, have cooking recipes in them too.) Probably Claire Ptak's THE VIOLET BAKERY COOKBOOK, King Arthur Flour WHOLE GRAIN BAKING, and Alice Medrich's SERIOUSLY BITTER SWEET are the ones I refer to most in addition to Chang's. (I do have 4 editions of JOY as well, more for reference than use.)

      @MsMerope We had a lot of cookbooks here, but the spouse dumped a lot of them (donated to the library).... Mostly specialty books that were not used much.
