https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_Vase actually just learning about this period in my #arthistory book, though i haven't gotten to this technique yet. It fits with the greek styles at the time but is clearly an attempt at bringing it into a new medium: glass. Pretty spiffy stuff but not what stained glass wound up being used for like at all.

      Portland Vase
The Portland Vase is a Roman cameo glass vase, which is dated between AD 1 and AD 25, though low BC dates have some scholarly support. It is the best known piece of Roman cameo glass and has served as an inspiration to many glass and porcelain makers from about the beginning of the 18th century onwards. It was first recorded in Rome in 1600–1601, and since 1810 has been in the British Museum in London. The museum held it on loan from the dukes of Portland until 1945, and bought it from them that year (GR 1945,0927.1). It is normally on display in Room 70. The vase measures about 25 centimetres (9.8 in) high and 18 cm (7.1 in) in diameter. It is made of violet-blue glass, and surrounded with a single continuous white glass cameo making two distinct scenes, depicting seven human figures, plus a large snake, and two bearded and horned heads below the handles, marking the break between the scenes. The bottom of the vase was a cameo glass disc, also in blue and white, showing a head, presumed to be of Paris or Priam based on the Phrygian cap it wears. This roundel clearly does not belong to the vase and has been displayed separately...

@ins0mniak i'm picturing a world where basically everywhere you go in a city looks like that, thanks to ubiquitous 3d glass printers.

That was pretty cool but transparent like at all.

similarly simpler design, also not probably very transparent. the sort of thing a highschool student could come up with a couple of tries and the right kind of kiln

I was out there to look around because I was accepted to George Mason Law. I was competely disgusted by the environment, and chose another school.

Generally, cities are no good for the soul. They're like crack. People can't escape them despite the fact they're being destroyed by them. It's really sad. I had a really good friend that landed a great job as an editor for a major newspaper in NYC. Despite the accolades, his life was nothing to envy.

Yeah I feel, Mason used to be a great school too.

I hardly go into DC anymore, I stick to the suburban sprawl. I'm not missing out on anything and its nice and peaceful. People are a lot more chill.

Its much better for my mental health to be in Virginia than it is to wander into the District.

I generally like urbanism, the negros I can live without obviously, but DC was a different beast. I had to spend some time there in the very late 90s and even then it was prison-cell depressing. Every other city, even Detroit, tries to highlight something that makes them livable but DC doesn't even bother.
