My and my friends are casually figuring out a portable LAN setup so we can play multiplayer Luanti/VoxeLibre in the flight to Japan and then sync up the changes to the worldmap to the real server when we land...

@hexman@poa.st Why would we not use 2.4 GHz?

@SuperDicq how can you do that without using the 2.4 GHz? Using audio maybe? -

@hj@shigusegubu.club @hexman@poa.st You can't actually crash a plane by turning on fucking WiFi lmao. It's a myth.

@themilkman@shitposter.world @hj@shigusegubu.club @hexman@poa.st No, of course not. You think they would actually design a modern jetplane in such a way that a consumer electronic device could actually interfere with it?

@SuperDicq @themilkman @hexman they did in the 80s and 90s because portable wireless devices weren't exactly common -

@SuperDicq @themilkman @hexman funny as it is, those planes were in use for a long time. I bet they forbid magnets in boeing plane, out of fear that it would affect loose screws :wojak_boomer_dance: Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this. -

@hj@shigusegubu.club @themilkman@shitposter.world @hexman@poa.st Planes were actually never susceptible to radio interference.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned in-flight use of most cell phones and wireless devices in 1991, citing the reason of ground network interference. It has nothing to do with instruments of the plane and it never did.narcolepsy and alcoholism :flag: likes this. -

@hj@shigusegubu.club @themilkman@shitposter.world @hexman@poa.st Like I'm sure nowadays half of the passengers are also listening to music on their Bluetooth earbuds also using 2.4 GHz.
I also really enjoy using Meshtastic which is at 868 MHz, you can find lots of nodes when using it from a plane obviously. I've literally never had airport security or flight crew bother me to ask what the giant antenna sticking out of my backpack was for. Nobody cares.
I really don't see why making a WiFi hotspot to play Luanti/VoxeLibre could be an issue.
Imagine a plane crashing because three nerds on their way to Japan were having a mile high LAN party. -

@FreeinTX@poa.st @hj@shigusegubu.club @hexman@poa.st I'm pretty sure the worst that could happen is that the pilot would hear some interference on the radio which would be slightly annoying. It still definitely wouldn't cause any safety issues.

@SuperDicq @hj @hexman Back when cell phones were 3 watt transmitters, there was a chance that a cell phone could interfere with an aircrafts NAV radios. Today, cell phones are .6 watts and have zero chance of interference. -

@adiz @SuperDicq @hexman @hj Cell phones using 3 watt transmitters in the 900 mhz and 1800 mhz bands had a potential to squash GPS reception at the 1200 mhz band.
That was the stated concern.narcolepsy and alcoholism :flag: likes this. -

@SuperDicq @hj @FreeinTX @hexman The FCC are the ones who pushed the regulations regarding cellular phone use in flight and it had nothing to do with aviation safety and everything to do with cellular phones in flight constantly jumping towers or whatever, something that the FCC didn't like. But it didn't bother the FAA.
Contemporaneously there is 5G interference affecting radar altimeters, but this can't really be regulated because it involves cellular phones and networks on the ground in/around airports and not passengers in the back.
