     @Csmgj Yes, my libertarian friend, the problem is definitely too much regulation not institutional corruption, revolving doors, lobbying, etc. And definitely not the profit motive. *smh*

     I wrote an article about this maybe ten years ago now.

     It's worse than this because a failing implant can cause problems beyond simply losing hearing.

     @aral @villares We were forced into an $20K upgrade for my wife's cochlear implants when Med-El discontinued making their proprietary rechargeable batteries the old ones used. Even with insurance, we were left with $7K out of pocket. All because they quit making the batteries after 10 years and like all rechargeable batteries, they eventually have to be replaced.
