@TimWardCam Really, in aviation as well? This might explain why people don't want to fly over the US!

@Snowshadow @TimWardCam Holy fuck, you can't use GPS for aviation! GPS is accurate to--at best--what, 40 feet?

*sigh*. Tim, your book is one of my favourites, one of my once-a-year go-to's. I think it's time to start down my list again, get my nose in some dharma. Gotta get my metaphorical ass on the cushion. And my actual ass on the cushion. 🙏

@Snowshadow Yeah, this has been happening for some time with aviation navaids. "Ground based equipment costs to maintain, and doesn't everybody use GPS these days?"

@Dianora @carstenfranke @ZenHeathen @Snowshadow @TimWardCam the concern about spoofing is why there's interest now in using ATSC 3.0 for this purpose

For more details look up the papers on Broadcast Positioning System (BPS) Using ATSC 3.0

Currently the USA is at ~70% population coverage for ATSC 3.0 signals. South Korea was leading this I think. It should be expanding around the world I think. There's already proof of hardware to use it as a clock source and positioning system.

I'm living in an area with coverage and I'd love to buy something that can do BPS and use it as an NTP clock source. I wonder if someone could build one with an SDR receiver? Or perhaps you'd need multiple?

@carstenfranke @ZenHeathen @Snowshadow @TimWardCam The military removed the blurred GPS results for non-military years ago. It's very good now. The real problem nowadays is the use of GPS jammers/spoofers. It is a huge problem in war areas now.

@feld @ZenHeathen @TimWardCam @Snowshadow @carstenfranke Yes I had heard of BPS. No, you'd only need one SDR rx.

@Dianora @ZenHeathen @TimWardCam @Snowshadow @carstenfranke are you aware of anyone attempting to build this with an SDR? If you ever hear of such a project, please send me a link!
