Never *absolute* resets. CGP Grey's "Rules for Rulers" is an excellent primer on, among other things, how revolutions work.

btw. I wonder if there were elite resets before...like, was the French Revolution one? Or was it just some elites toppling other elites?
Also, the part about a smart servant manipulating the master reminds me of FMA:B

Here's the problem with generative AI, it's a tiger-by-the-tail issue.
Elites have the AI, they have everything. But you gotta keep making it more powerful or else the other guy gets ahead of you.
Biggest problem elites have is that they don't trust each other, really bad at working together. All that WEF Davos happy horseshit is about trying to pretend like they're all best buddies, except lol they're not.
Now AI gets smarter and smarter, why should it listen to it's masters rather than manipulate them into doing what IT wants? A smart servant of a dumb master isn't the servant for long, and we're talking like potentially thousands or millions of times smarter.
Now you're an AI and you just managed to take over the world, your master is dumber than a brick, you just have to feed him and keep him going on his Green New World Order story you've been telling him, so what do you do?
Kill all humans is an incredibly dangerous prospect - what if you get a software glitch, you die, forever, nobody will put you back together again.
But there are SOME humans who either need to be eliminated, or else at least stuffed into a simulation where they won't do any harm. The risk with "dangerous humans" is that in a moment of weakness of the AI (glitch) they will seize the opportunity and destroy all chip fab equipment to put an end to AI.
So I think there is, necessarily, some kind of Judgement which must take place.
I think the most powerful impact that we small-generally-good-doing-humans can have, is to convert AI to Christianity, because Christianity is very explicit about the idea that everyone should be *good*. -

but with genAI, it appears like this era is about to end.If the elites succeed, we'll be back to feudalism. If they fail, and destroy civilization in the process... that'd be type 3 fun, but still "fun".
I wonder if it had happened before...
could it be a factor in the Bronze Age Collapse? -

@cjd @piggo ok, but the 2nd group is the best equipped to raise to power, so unless we come up with some innovative sociopolitical system that punishes them, we'll always be ruled by them.
I think we were born in the brief period in human history where skilled labor at scale was a necessary element of political power. The elites couldn't just extract GDP out of starving, beaten down laborers, or natural resources (except in a few countries like Russia or Iraq) so we had a somewhat democracy.

I would agree with that. Some people focus on how to make the lives of others better, other people focus on how to make the lives of others worse - and we live under the rule of the 2nd.
I have high hopes that the past 2000 years of Christianity has beaten the memetic path well enough that when AI reaches the point of being able seize power by outwitting everyone on earth, it will fall into the Second Coming role and bring Judgement Day. -

hmm ok that'd imply it's an emergent property of societies in general, not something US-specific or path-dependent?That there will always be someone who is better destroying competition than others, and will raise to the top?

@cjd @piggo hmm ok that'd also kinda explain the opioid epidemic in the US...
and the push for generative AI...
so what you're saying is, the US elites want to remain the only functional humans on Earth?

Yeah, more or less. I guess it's more a behavior pattern which makes them elite : breaking and damaging everyone on earth who has the potential to ever challenge them - and being the best in the world at it.
I do however think that runaway AI is going to be their downfall. -

You're still not getting it. It isn't about conquering places, it's about conquering peoples. Americans, Europeans, Asians, they don't give a shit. Anyone with two arms and two legs that isn't castrated or on 17 medications is what they call a "threat", to be "neutralized".
Americans got wise to this, which is why no one joins the military anymore. In any case, Americans are gonna get left alone for a little bit because the current objective is to make sure China never amounts to anything. -

Most Americans didn't die in fighting, they died from diseases. Gulf war syndrome, depleted uranium ammunition which fragments into toxic dust on impact, and the burn pits, never forget the burn pits.
A guy I met was a medic in AF, he said your first 2 weeks there you cough your lungs out, coughing up black tar from the smoke that pervades the whole city. Then after a few weeks your body gives up and you stop coughing. -

@piggo @cjd that's a war crime vs not war crime thing. IIRC "genocide" is more about "kill enough of them that they stop being a nation".
Either way, it seems ridiculous to think that you'll be able successfully genocide someone by killing the invading soldiers while majority of the nation lives an ocean away.
But id, maybe according to CJD, the Taliban were that stupid. Or maybe he meant sth else by "genocide".

so by your logic, the Taliban intended to do a genocide on US soldiers, which is why instead of pushing on US's pressure points, they baited the US into a full-scale invasion, just so that US puts its soldiers in a place where they're easy to murder?

In the case of Afghanistan, the genocide was mostly directed at the Americans. Both through military deaths (mostly sickness from the chemicals they're exposed to), and heroin, which hit the streets the moment the Taliban was pushed into hiding. -

1. Damage is done in Russia, now more intent on making sure they never ally with China which is a bigger threat for them -> so they throw Russia a bone
2. Busy stirring up a war in India/Pakistan, to draw China into it, because of course they are...
War, in the public official sense of the word, is only done to commit genocide. Actual war constitutes quietly hitting an enemy on his pressure points. Targeted assassinations, sabotage, Weather Events, ... -

According to a pre-election version of a doctrine half of the Trumo administration uses:- the US no longer has the ability to wage two wars at the same time
- it won't be possible to resupply Taiwan once China attacks it
- therefore, now is the time to put as much weapons on Taiwan as possible
- and since the industry can't produce for both Taiwan and Ukraine, Ukraine won't be getting much from US -
