We mock Europoor but honestly to be able to have drinks and smoke in an outdoor setting that isn't a Bdubs around people who aren't 300 pound gastropods and without bluetooth speakers blasting is something I've always wanted to experience

@PraxisOfEvil Tbh I came from a different dimension and never really participated in Europoor mocking - despite growing up in rural America. What’s contested ?

@WandererUber @skylar @PraxisOfEvil @wgiwf It's a give and take, but there's an acquired preference to their way of life that sticks with you. At first I hated how zero apartments had dryers or dish washers (some didn't even have washing machines) but once you do those things manually, you really come to realize how little labor is saved in supposed labor saving devices compared to the energy it costs to run them. People will complain about electricity bills here in the US but stick their nose up if you say you use clotheslines and manually scrub your dishes. Rheristies likes this. -

@WandererUber @skylar @PraxisOfEvil @wgiwf This hypothetical is so funny to me because I actually *did* live above a chic little pizzeria for nearly a year within a decently sized euro city. My biggest complaint? They were open from 18:00-1:00 and played music during that time. Fortunately, because the houses were made of brick and not cardboard, having the windows closed blocked out the noise, so it only became an annoyance during the summer when it was too hot to close windows, but by that point it was warm enough for outdoor labor so I was dead tired anyway and slept through it all.
Was it annoying? Yeah a little bit. Was it worth being able to sneak downstairs and get some late night pizza, all to myself, fresh whenever I wanted for €5? Absolutely, and if you genuinely think suburbia is preferable then you deserve every minute of commute and social isolation.Rheristies likes this. -

@veff @skylar @PraxisOfEvil @wgiwf Neat story. I think the pinnacle of quaint euro urban design is still the Netherlands but I haven't been to Europe enough to make this a fair comparison.
Big L for Euros is that you can't easily put a window AC unit in their windows so they mostly just don't have any. -

@skylar @PraxisOfEvil @wgiwf Land use is grouped by purpose in Europe as well.
There's some very nice things that can never spring to life in the American suburb. I think you underestimate how good living could be. Not to say that the Europeans have it figured out right now, their nice stuff is centuries old at this point.
Also I guess it's better to have the baker get up even earlier and drive his (not loud at all in your world for some reason) car past 5000 people to get to work on time -

@WandererUber @PraxisOfEvil @wgiwf then imagine it's some other business. maybe a nice bakery? oh wait, bakers start the day even earlier than fishmongers.
grouping land use by purpose is a smart policy that improves quality of life for everyone, except obnoxious europoors who piss and moan about how badly they want to walk to the grocery store for one single bag of items every day of their lives. -

@skylar @PraxisOfEvil @wgiwf Suburban sprawl is a bad thing because the suburbs are badly designed. Low density neighborhoods themselves are no problem.
They have those all over Europe.Rheristies likes this. -

@WandererUber @PraxisOfEvil @wgiwf how are they badly designed?
do yall think people are desperate to buy a house next door to a fish market that receives a delivery of fresh fish at 5AM every day from a box truck with the world's loudest backup alarm and has a dumpster of old fish scraps baking in the summer sun in the alley? -

@wgiwf @PraxisOfEvil suburban sprawl is not a bad thing
americans were smart enough to invent the horseless carriage so we wouldn't have to live in tiny apartments in overcrowded cities just to get to work -

@PraxisOfEvil It's one thing to mock the Europoors for their retarded takes and laws but defending our disgusting way of life to spite them is a self own. 12 hour workdays, corporate consumerism, and endless suburban sprawl are objectively bad things. -

@rher @PraxisOfEvil @WandererUber @wgiwf older buildings had some advantages in reducing noise pollution like having a lot of mass in the walls and solid core doors, but also some drawbacks like poorly sealing single pane windows and poorly sealed construction in general. Rheristies likes this.
