I will be starting the upgrade to Mastodon v4.0.1 for everyone on Masto.host.
Usually I would test a release for 24 hours before installing it but as this one includes a security fix, I will bypass the wait and start the installation.
You should expect about 30 seconds of downtime during the upgrade (larger instances a bit longer).
The upgrade will be done one by one to avoid database overloads, so it will take a while to reach everyone.

This looks like it will turn into a complex upgrade. I was about to pull an all-nighter and upgrade everyone on Masto.host to Mastodon v4.0.1 but v4.0.2 was just released https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.0.2
I will pause upgrades now because there is no point in forcing myself to do an all-nighter for something that I need to do tomorrow again.
So, tomorrow I will upgrade the servers still on v3.5.3 to v4.0.2 and then upgrade the ones that are already on v4.0.1 to v4.0.2.

OK, I will restart the upgrade for Mastodon servers still on v3.5.3 to v4.0.2 now.
Same 30 second downtime expected.

@ro @jwildeboer in this case is 'social' but the alphabetic order does have a small impact but only once the update automation reaches the server the instance is at :)

OK, one more step done. Everyone on Masto.host is now running v4.0.
About half running v4.0.2 and half v4.0.1.
For the ones on v4.0.2 the upgrade is done (unless v4.0.3 is released ? ).
The others on v4.0.1 I will upgrade them in the next hours to v4.0.2. A small restart is required that will cause about 15 seconds of downtime.

OK, finally the upgrade is done and everyone on Masto.host is running Mastodon v4.0.2.
Sorry for any extra restarts that were required on some servers. It was not a smooth upgrade.

@noivad Well, neither of my options were great and v4.0.1 has the security patch, I decided to risk it.
I also trust the Mastodon devs a lot. I have been installing / maintaining / upgrading Mastodon (pretty much daily) for over 5 years and it never caused me to lose any data or end up with a broken installation that couldn't be easily fixed.
Obviously I also have backups :)
But yeah, not my favourite thing.
