> Ubisoft stated that Assassin's Creed Shadows surpassed a million players on its release date,[80] and had three million players within a week.[81][82] Steam showed a concurrent player count peak of 41,412 on launch day,[80] growing to 64,825 during the first weekend after launch.[82][83] The feat established the game as the highest Assassin's Creed game by concurrent players on Steam to date.[82] Shadows was the best-selling game of March 2025 according to analysis by market research firm Circana,[84][85] and the second-best selling game of the year after Monster Hunter Wilds.[86]
Am I missing something? Looks like the game was a strong commercial success despite the "woke" stuff?
I haven't played it or looked into it much, so I have no opinion on whether the success was deserved or not. I only know that the main characters are a black guy (based on a real person from history) and a woman if I remember correctly, which in and on itself isn't a bad thing; just a question of how well the idea is executed.
For example, if the black protagonist talks like a 21st century US American civil rights activist despite being a 17th century East African dude who ended up in Japan, then that would be quite cringe-worthy and eyeroll-inducing. Likewise, if the female protag started talking like she's a liberal feminist from tumblr while being an 18th century Japanese assassin or something, I couldn't stomach that.
But if the game was such a success then it must have not been that bad... No wait, I just checked the sales of DA:Veilguard and it was also a big commercial success, so never mind, I guess people really buy anything. :blobcat-thonking: Also, I just literally laughed out loudly when I saw that the only award it won was from GLAAD. :blobcat-extremejoy:
In any case, it seems like the higher-ups are likely to ignore the social media complaints / sarcastic memes / etc. about the games, since the money is flowing. They will only react if people actually refuse to buy the game, like it was the case with Concord for example, which was down to a lot more than just "woke stuff" though.
As much as I'm critical of some "woke" things, I think it's often just a cope when people say "go woke go broke." There are some instances where it happens (Bud Light??) but it's not universal, especially not in gaming and other media consumed by youngsters.

@taylan @PurpCat @Hoss Have you not seen the massive shill campaign for both?
Veilguard and both Shadows had a huge similar review spree where they all regurgitated the same "return to form" thing, it was so fucking obvious man
>But if you want to claim that Ubisoft is in financial trouble because of "woke" elements in their games / in AC:S specifically, then you'll need better evidence. I think there's an element of cope in there. I don't think the situation is that simple.
People have been whining about an Assassin's Creed set in Japan for ages and yet here we are with Ubisoft's financial troubles not getting any better

So you're saying it's all a big conspiracy to make the game (AC:S) seem commercially successful? Okie dokie.
It looks like I didn't look closely enough at DA:V though so you're right about that one:
> In January 2025, EA announced that Veilguard had "engaged" 1.5 million players during the three months ending December 31, 2024, underperforming their expectations by nearly half.[113][e] The same month, EA reported a poor performance of EA Sports FC 25 and a 18% loss in share value following their holiday earning reports.[41][115][116]
But if you want to claim that Ubisoft is in financial trouble because of "woke" elements in their games / in AC:S specifically, then you'll need better evidence. I think there's an element of cope in there. I don't think the situation is that simple.
And even for DA:V, it's easy for the pro-woke faction to argue that it was just not executed well. I mean, that dialogue about being non-binary... Holy shit. It was like a parody of a woke video game that an anti-woke person would come up with, and then people would say "come on bro, that parody is way too exaggerated" except it's actually real and not even a parody at all.

@taylan @PurpCat @Hoss DA:Veilguard was obviously a massive failure, the Steam concurrent users were actually pathetic on both, nobody gives a single fuck about industry awards, Shadows' development was a fucking disaster so they'd probably need significantly more sales, also remember that these games have like 10 of thousands of people on them and basically a crazy amount of marketing in money, and if Ubisoft was doing "Good" in the slightest, they wouldn't have transferred their IP in a partly Tencent owned subsidiary with the stipulation that Tencent will own it all if Ubisoft can't manage to get back on their feet, all of this days after release
Also it's real fucking convenient that an "analyst" firm is talking about sales that we're not getting, while Ubisoft counts players so they can cook the book and include various subscription players instead of sales
Also

Based on like 1 or 2 lines of text, or more like based on ideology
