I have recently been asked by @panoptykon if it was possible to create an online age verification system that would not be a privacy nightmare.

I replied that yes, under certain assumptions, this is possible. And provided a rough sketch of such a system.

But privacy is not the only issue with systems like that:

@rysiek @panoptykon >2. You scan the QR code using an app you trust.
Such system is a privacy nightmare from step 1, as a demon rectangle is required to use the system.

What about those who don't have demon rectangles?

      >If so, the trusted app sends the formally encoded question to an e-ID service.
An e-ID service alone is a privacy nightmare and a demon rectangle being required to use it is a double privacy nightmare.

      >the e-ID service gets no information that identifies the website that requires your age to be verified
Different websites would have different age requirements and therefore the service could take an educated guess as to what site you are signing up to (even signed up at x time is enough, if it is possible to poll or exhaustively determine which accounts were signed-up for at what time).

If you don't want children to access a website, the only effective method is to make accessing the website require knowing how to use a computer, which will deny access to most children (and many intentionally unskilled adults too, but that's a feature).

@panoptykon @rysiek >Are you suggesting that content providers should make their content less accessible, e.g. thru mobile devices?
If it's "content", it's worthless and should not exist.

If it's quality works, it should indeed be only accessible by those who deserve to access it.

You can install GNU on an Android device just fine via Termux and provide the output of a GNU bash command just fine.

      >Won't this kind of requirement be just as hard to balance with adult users' rights
If you are unwilling to learn how to use any tool, you do not deserve to use that tool to do anything - you should rather do something else.

Are you suggesting that content providers should make their content less accessible, e.g. thru mobile devices? Won't this kind of requirement be just as hard to balance with adult users' rights as age verification feature, and even more difficult to execute?
