Ok, Now I need #Linux help. I can't log in.
It's a terminal only set up. Entering the username comes back with "Login incorrect" and doesn't ask my password. I can login as root at the local keyboard, and I can su to the other user. passwd -S says the account isn't locked out. Reboot didn't help, updates didn't help. Cannot log in to anything via ssh. Attempting to change the password incase I got it wrong says no, as the password matches the old password.
    Disto is OpenSuse Tumbleweed

Terminal also says "POWER FAILURE" every time I attempt this. That's presumably the APC daemon, as we did recently have a power failure and the UPS triggered a shutdown.

Server seems to be otherwise working normally, as a user reported they had been accessing services it provides and nothing has reported any outage other than my attempts at rebooting and updating.

@ity What can I look for or fix? I don't have a lot of experience fiddling with PAM

@hellomiakoda I can try to vomit some ideas but best over sync chat, I am not used to doing tech support over fedi haha

Specifically, I would try to look into any kinda logs, Pam usually would log stuff somewhere

And I would check the config files

Lastly, making a backup of /etc/passwd & /etc/shadow and wiping them, with a recovery USB ready + several root shells opened to be sure, could be a nuclear sanity check

It might also be one of the Pam modules failing. Maybe there is one that checks the status of the power daemon... Maybe try to reset the status, unsure.

@hellomiakoda hmm, does anything show up in the journal? If you log in as root then switch to a different VT, try your user login, then back to root and run journalctl -e it might shed some light on why the login failed, hopefully

@hellomiakoda do you have any kind of biometric login enabled (i.e. fingerprint-reader)?

I thought of something to look at... (taking a break at the moment). Booting the snapshot ro works, booting anything "normally" does not. So... what do the two hrub entries look like? What if this whole time, something got fucked up in grub? What if it's failing to mount one of the btrf volumes? That could certainly make it unable to load AppArmor profiles!
