@SuperDicq The typical Xiaomi experience of unlocking the bootloader. From scratch is correct as it's an anti-theft measure.

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world @dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest Just referring the exact words. I mean this is probably just very badly translated Chinese.
Nobody ever says "wait from scratch", they probably meant "wait again" or "wait from the beginning". -

@dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest @thatbrickster@shitposter.world I'm in general not a big fan of having to ask a server if you can pretty please get root access to your own fucking device.
What will happen when their servers go down? -

@dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest @thatbrickster@shitposter.world Yes but imagine you get one of these phones a couple of years from now from the second hand market. The servers are long gone and the original owner never did this step.
You're completely screwed now. -

I mean the unlocking still works even on super old xiaomi devices so that's not currently an issue at least -

@dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest @thatbrickster@shitposter.world What about 10 years? 15 years? Hardware should not have an expiry date. I have phones older than this that still work.

@SuperDicq Another related issue is bricking unlocked devices when trying to lock the bootloader. I've fixed OnePlus devices where that occurred, Fairphone charged me 62€ for the privilege.

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world @dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest Personally I don't see the benefit of locking the bootloader in the first place.
If the storage of the device itself could be fully encrypted then the bootloader being potentially compromised wouldn't matter. -

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world @dushman@hollow.raccoon.quest There are free software solutions that also provide FMD functionality, such as https://f-droid.org/packages/de.nulide.findmydevice/

@SuperDicq Xiaomi offers a Find My service which becomes useless if the device is flashed with a custom Android distro. I believe locking the bootloader keeps it functional after a factory reset.

Yeah if you have an unlocked bl with full storage encryption it won't really be a security issue. Maybe besides an evil maid attack but like you'd have to be targeted by the feds or some other big organization for that to potentially happen. In conversation permalink -

@SuperDicq @thatbrickster @dushman The bootloader being proprietary malware is a problem even if the device is fully encrypted - as the bootloader can go and hook itself into the password entry process, extract the crypto keys and then do whatever.
Bootloader handcuffing has no security benefit - it's about restricting the user.
The only way to have security is for everything to be free software and then the user being able to optionally set a key.In conversation permalink
