It’s disheartening to see AI reactionism lead my community to a 180° on copyright.
Everyone is merrily attacking LibGen now. If it didn’t exist, big tech companies would still find training data, it just wouldn’t be accessible to regular people.

My stance is:
1) Copyright should exist, but it should be limited in duration and scope to promote creation.
2) Fuck privatizing public research.
3) Fuck for-profit piracy.
4) MMLs are massively over-hyped.
@whitequark to be fair the clever campaign that everyone seems to be falling for lets you search for your books in the dataset, but still disappointing from people that I would have never imagined calling for the shutdown of TPB or ZLib
@filippo "scientific knowledge, paid for by the public, and often discovered in public institutions for the benefit of the public, being public is bad actually" is a remarkably... something take
@ryanc @filippo i would not be actively against a form of copyright that is limited to individuals only, no corporate ownership
@whitequark @ryanc @filippo In the context of a legal framework that allows corporations to enter arbitrarily-evil contracts with individuals I don't think limiting copyright ownership to individuals would make any material difference.
@dalias @whitequark @ryanc @filippo this is apparently exactly what happened to all previous expansions to copyright that vested in the creating individuals.
