On my old HP laptop rn (the Wi-Fi card on my desktop fried itself) :drgn_woozy:
Gonna configure the fuck out of this PC (customized GNOME rocks, but vanilla GNOME sucks)

@david @radmin my new used travel machine is an hp elitebook.
elitebooks are the business models though. companies usually don't cheap out on those for obvious reasons :cat_sad: -

@radmin Ive not had a HP laptop, but my moms HP started having issues with the battery, so it has to be plugged in the wall all the time.
my mom never has it unplugged anyways -

@david@blob.cat It went from good (when I first used it, where it had Windows 11) to really terrible (when I struggled with firmware issues on multiple Ubuntu and Fedora-based distros) to good again (when I installed Ultramarine on it)

@radmin @david not enough money there to be worth it. businesses are paying like 1,000$+ for the laptop and service contracts. consumer computing is wholly saturated and increasingly people only have locked down nightmare rectangles instead of even having a proper computer. or they have some crippleware chromebook.
a lot more corners have to get cut making a 300$ rig compared to the 2,000$ one -

@icedquinn@blob.cat @david@blob.cat Yea, I wish consumer laptops would receive more love from the companies behind them - Not everyone (especially those in developing countries) has a healthy used market, or sometimes the devices themselves would have been suitable in aspects besides quality (such as specs or service) :pensivecat:

@radmin @david then you have startups like framework that actually tried to make new hardware (system76 was just relabelling random chinese factory slop) but they're simultaneously too expensive for consumers and unattractive to businesses.
i spoke to a business who passed them over because the lead time is long and the warranties were too short, they ended up going with lenovo because they offer 5-years. i think frameworks longest is like 3, and it still takes months to get one. also framework won't add the nipple even though the thonkpad community has been begging them to. or mechanical keebs, even though kailh made that possible ages ago.
frameworks like the only new blood we have and they're kind of shitting the bed slowly, otherwise its really old blue chip corps that are kinda just sitting on their thumbs (everyone basically already has a desktop pc so we're really just selling replacements at this point) -

@adiz @david @radmin framework seems to have decided to take on new debtlords to make non-modular desktops and like a printer or something instead.
i guess they found enough hipsters to make numbers big enough for VC to let them keep farting around -

And I know multiple people who are similar. Once you're accustomed to a pointing device and the physical north-side mouse keys above the track pad you never want to go back. Framework would make a killing if they just added the ThinkPad layout as an option. @david @radmin

You were paying a premium for, guaranteed, 100% Linux support and that's all. Also Pop!OS I guess, which is good but who cares.
I have one. The hardware is only "okay". But everything works perfectly in Linux which is a relief.pistolero likes this.
