VLC Media Player and MPV actually share the volume slider setting with each other?

What the fuck? Have the I gone insane?

This is actually driving me insane because I use VLC for music and MPV for videos and I don't want them to share the volume setting actually.

@SuperDicq Well yeah, there's only one volume setting.

I believe you can configure mpv to apply its own adjustment to the volume (as an offset from the system volume) by default.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com What do you mean there's only one volume setting? Which volume setting does it use?

Because I use pulseaudio and every application has its own volume setting as far as I know, but VLC and MPV share the same one.

@SuperDicq It's bloated poetteringware and unsurprisingly straight ALSA works much better.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com Pipewire is becoming the default on most distros soon, at least that isn't Poettingware

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com Ah yes basic shit like being able to control sound settings of different applications individually or working with multiple audio devices at once, that sure is bloat.

One volume slider from alsamixer all I need!

I am perfect and everyone who has a slightly different usecase than me is using BLOAT

The possibility of multiple volume settings is only a drawback to me.

      >working with multiple audio devices at once,
      Yes, ALSA can do that.

      >I am perfect and everyone who has a slightly different usecase than me is using BLOAT
      You got it.

I don't think it can. Can you show me for example how I can play the sound of a video player over HDMI while simultaneously playing the sound of my web browser through only my headphones using just Alsa?

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com Also maybe this is a skill issue but I don't think that monitoring an input device is even possible with just alsa.

      in reply to
@SuperDicq Why indeed it can do that.

See `mpv --audio-device=help` and then select the right HDMI sound card.

      i.e. `mpv --audio-device="alsa/hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0" <video>`

      Your .asoundrc should then by default select only the headphone jack (which may not even need setting if the headphone jack is the default selected sound card, like on most computers);
      defaults.pcm.!card x
      defaults.pcm.!device y

As a result, the sound of the video player will only play over HDMI and the web browser will play only to the headphones.

@SuperDicq Yes, a lot of software is junk now.

Thankfully someone has written the apulse library, meaning you can use software that depends on pulseaudio without pulseaudio or pipewire.

@lispi314@udongein.xyz @Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com JACK makes ALSA usable but then again if you run Pipewire there is no more need for JACK as it does everything that JACK does but better in my opinion.

@Suiseiseki @SuperDicq The only real alternative to PulseAudio/Pipewire is JACK, because one can then at least plug the individual programs into a mixer or other virtual sound equipment/software to do the required modifications one wants.
