What would be a great first home base station for #HamRadio ? :blobfox: -

@tk depends on budget, local facilities and interests. Very popular choices would be an Icom 7300 or a Yaesu 991A. Antenna-wise, either a vertical or something like a G5RV. There are many used HF rigs in the market. Anything which is younger than 15 years and in decent condition could be an affordable choice.

@tk@bbs.kawa-kun.com Yaesu makes static sound good
the cheaper rigs are probably fine, though. i haven't really used them other than weird sdr modems that aren't suited to general ham usage.
you get what you pay for when it comes to antennas, so spend your money on those.Doughnut Lollipop 【記録係】:blobfoxgooglymlem: likes this. -

@DC2ZP Looking at multi-band G5RV antennas and I'm a bit concerned about the length. The only place where I can hang it is a small balcony, maybe 12'×5'. :blobfoxsad: -

@tk this is a rather small space for a HF antenna. Either go for portable right away and maybe only have a small vhf/uhf station for local repeater communications at home, or look into magnetic loop antennas. Short verticals for like cars, usually need a decent counter poise which is hard to have on a balcony and the performance is poor. My first ham station was in central Berlin with just a balcony. This is why during my Berlin years I mostly worked portable.

Echo that it really depends on your budget, location, and goals. The most important thing is the antenna system, moreso than the radio. And that's very dependent on location and goals.
That being said, an ICOM 7300 or Yaesu FTDX10 are hard to beat for nice 100W radios... but you can find excellent used older radios for much, much cheaper at a local ham swap if there's one near you.

Ordered a Yaesu FT-991A and an antenna that should be good enough for VHF/UHF. Now I need to figure out how to attach it to the stucco on the outside of my building. :blobfoxthinkgoogly: #HamRadio #radio
What do you mean "bad financial decision"? :blobfoxgooglytrash:
